The right ATS resume format for India is a single-column, reverse-chronological resume with standard headings, JD keywords, and selectable text. Keep CTC and notice period off the resume itself. Put them in your Naukri profile fields and application forms, where recruiters actually filter on them.
Most global guides stop at fonts and columns. This one covers what Indian recruiters and portals actually parse, including the CTC and notice period question nobody answers properly.

What is the right ATS resume format for India?
A single-column layout, reverse-chronological order, standard section headings, 10-12pt standard fonts, and a text-based PDF or DOCX. That combination parses cleanly on Naukri, Foundit, Hirist, Instahyre, and company career portals.
An ATS (Applicant Tracking System) reads your resume as plain text, top to bottom. It extracts your name, roles, dates, skills, and education into database fields. Then it scores you against the job description.
If the parser cannot read your layout, your experience never enters the database. Jobscan research shows over 99% of Fortune 500 companies screen resumes with an ATS. In India, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, and nearly every funded startup route applications the same way.
Naukri adds a second layer. Its recruiter search tool (Resdex) fills fields like Current Designation, Total Experience, and Key Skills from your uploaded resume. A resume format India recruiters can't parse means you vanish from those searches too.
What is the correct section order for an Indian resume?
For experienced professionals: Contact, Summary, Skills, Work Experience, Education, Certifications. For freshers: Contact, Summary, Education, Skills, Projects, Internships, Certifications.
The logic is simple. Lead with your strongest evidence.
If you have 2+ years of experience:
- Name and contact details (in the body, never the header)
- Professional Summary (2-3 lines, role-targeted)
- Skills (grouped: technical, tools, domain)
- Work Experience (reverse chronological, quantified bullets)
- Education (degree, institute, year)
- Certifications and Projects (if relevant)
If you are a fresher:
- Name and contact details
- Summary or Objective (target role plus strongest proof)
- Education (with CGPA if 8.0+ or 75%+)
- Skills
- Projects (tools used plus measurable outcome)
- Internships and training
- Certifications
Keep it to one page for 0-2 years of experience. Two pages are normal and accepted in India for 5+ years. ATS engines do not penalise a second page. Irrelevant content does.
Use exact heading names: "Work Experience", "Education", "Skills", "Projects", "Certifications". Creative headings like "My Journey" confuse parsers and cost you extracted experience.
Should you put CTC and notice period on your resume in India?
No, not in the resume document. Put current CTC, expected CTC, and notice period in portal profile fields and application forms instead. The one exception: add "Notice period: X days" as a single line if you are on a short notice or immediate joiner, because that is a genuine selling point.
This is the part global ATS guides skip entirely, and it matters in India.
Why CTC stays off the resume. Your resume circulates. It gets forwarded, uploaded to vendor databases, and shared with referrers. A printed CTC anchors every future negotiation and goes stale the moment you get a hike. Recruiters who need it will ask, or read it from your Naukri profile. When a form demands expected CTC, give a researched range, not a single number.
Why notice period is different. Notice period is a filter, not a negotiation anchor. Indian recruiters search Naukri and Instahyre by notice period buckets (immediate, 15 days, 30 days, 60 days, 90 days). So:
- Fill the notice period field on every portal, always. Incomplete fields drop you from recruiter searches.
- If you are immediate or serving notice with under 30 days left, add one line near your contact details: "Notice period: Immediate" or "Serving notice, last working day 25 July 2026". Recruiters shortlist faster when they see it.
- If you have a standard 60-90 day notice, leave it off the document. Let the portal field carry it.
Location preference follows the same rule. Write "Bengaluru | Open to Hyderabad, Pune" in your contact line if you are actively open to relocation. Otherwise city and state are enough. No full postal address, no PIN code.
What should you include and exclude in a resume for Indian companies?
Include contact details, a targeted summary, grouped skills, quantified experience, and education. Exclude your date of birth, marital status, photo, full address, and ID numbers.
Indian resumes carry legacy habits from a paper-CV era. Recruiters today read them as clutter, and some create bias risk. Here is the full include/exclude table for how to write a resume for Indian companies in 2026:
- Name, phone, professional email. Include?: Yes · Where it goes: Top of the body, never in the header/footer
- City and state. Include?: Yes · Where it goes: Contact line ("Pune, Maharashtra")
- LinkedIn URL, GitHub/portfolio. Include?: Yes, if strong · Where it goes: Contact line
- Professional summary. Include?: Yes · Where it goes: 2-3 sentences, tailored per JD
- Skills section. Include?: Yes · Where it goes: Grouped, 8-12 role-relevant skills
- Quantified work experience. Include?: Yes · Where it goes: 3-6 bullets per role, metrics in each
- Current CTC / expected CTC. Include?: No · Where it goes: Portal fields and application forms only
- Notice period. Include?: Usually no · Where it goes: Portal field; one line on resume only if immediate/short
- Date of birth. Include?: No · Where it goes: Nowhere. Outdated and invites bias
- Marital status, gender, religion. Include?: No · Where it goes: Nowhere
- Photo. Include?: No, for most roles · Where it goes: Only if the employer explicitly asks (aviation, acting, some hospitality)
- Full home address, PIN. Include?: No · Where it goes: City and state suffice
- Aadhaar, PAN, passport number. Include?: Never · Where it goes: Identity-theft risk on circulated documents
- Languages known. Include?: Optional · Where it goes: One line, only if the role needs it
- Hobbies. Include?: Rarely · Where it goes: Only if directly relevant to the role
Every bullet in Work Experience should carry a number. "Reduced checkout API latency 42%" beats "worked on performance optimisation". Recruiters skim for scale and outcomes; our guide on what recruiters look for in a resume in India breaks down the six-second scan.
How do you pick resume keywords and mirror the job description?
Pull the 6-10 most repeated skills, tools, and role terms from the JD. Then place them in your summary, skills section, and experience bullets, in the same words the JD uses.
The ATS scores keyword match against the JD. A generic resume misses those exact terms and gets ranked down, which is why generic resumes get rejected in India.
Do it in four steps:
- Extract. Read the JD twice. List every skill, tool, framework, and domain term that appears more than once. "React", "microservices", "GST compliance", "channel sales", whatever the role demands.
- Match the JD's exact wording. If the JD says "REST APIs", write "REST APIs", not "web services". Spell out acronyms once: "Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)".
- Place keywords where parsers weight them. Summary first, then the skills section, then inside experience bullets. A skill listed but never shown in a bullet reads as padding. Newer Indian ATS scoring down-ranks that skill-experience mismatch.
- Prove each keyword with a metric. "Built React dashboards used by 40K monthly users" ties the keyword to evidence.
Software engineers should go deeper with our resume keywords for software engineers in India list. And repeat this per application: one master profile, one tailored version per JD. That is the whole method behind tailoring your resume to a JD with AI.
What formatting breaks ATS parsing?
Tables, two-column layouts, text boxes, images, graphics, and contact details placed in the document header or footer. Any of these can delete whole sections from what the ATS reads.
The failure modes, briefly:
- Tables. Parsers read across cells left to right, merging unrelated columns into gibberish. Your skills table becomes scrambled text. Use plain bulleted lists.
- Two-column layouts. The parser reads the full page width line by line. Sidebar skills mix into your work history. Most Canva templates fail here. Single column only.
- Headers and footers. Many ATS engines skip them completely. Contact details placed there can vanish, leaving a well-scored resume nobody can call.
- Photos, icons, skill bars, logos. Unreadable to parsers, and they add noise around real text.
- Decorative bullets and symbols. Stars, arrows, and emoji cause encoding errors. Use plain round bullets or hyphens.
- Fancy fonts. Stick to Arial, Calibri, Georgia, or Times New Roman at 10-12pt. Name at 14-18pt.
- Image-based PDFs. Test yours: press Ctrl+A in the PDF. If the text does not highlight, an ATS reads nothing. Export a text-based PDF, or DOCX where the portal prefers it (Naukri's parser handles DOCX very reliably).
Keep margins between 0.5 and 1 inch and line spacing at 1.0-1.15. Name the file professionally: Priya_Sharma_Backend_Developer.pdf.

How does myjobb build ATS-clean resumes for Indian jobs?
myjobb's AI resume builder generates a fresh, tailored resume per job in 10-20 seconds, formatted to pass ATS parsing by default. You keep one master profile; it handles the format and keyword work per JD.
Each output is a LaTeX-rendered PDF: single column, selectable text, standard fonts, tested against 16 ATS engines. The builder ranks the keywords each JD scans for, rewrites your bullets around them, and quantifies impact without ever inventing facts. A built-in ATS checker scores keyword coverage, quantified bullets, action verbs, and structure before you apply.
You can also drop any existing resume plus a JD into the free standalone checker and fix the gaps one click at a time. Format solved, you can focus on the part that actually wins interviews: targeting the right jobs fast. Our guide to finding a job in India fast in 2026 covers that next step.
FAQ: ATS resume format for India
Should I mention CTC on my resume in India?
No. Keep current and expected CTC off the resume document. Resumes circulate widely, and a printed CTC anchors every negotiation and goes stale after your next hike. Enter CTC in Naukri profile fields and application forms, where recruiters filter on it. When forms demand a number, give a researched range.
Is it okay to mention my notice period on my resume?
Yes, but only when it helps you. Add one line like "Notice period: Immediate" if you can join within 30 days, since recruiters shortlist short-notice candidates faster. If you have a standard 60-90 day notice, leave it off the document and fill the notice period field on every job portal instead.
Which resume format is best for ATS, PDF or Word?
Both work if the text is selectable. A text-based PDF preserves layout and parses cleanly on modern ATS engines; DOCX is the safest fallback and parses very reliably on Naukri. Follow the job posting's instruction if it states one. Never submit image-based PDFs exported from design tools, since parsers extract nothing from them.
Should I put a photo on my resume in India?
No, for most roles. ATS software cannot read images, and photos add parsing noise plus bias risk. The old Indian habit of a passport-size photo hurts you on portal applications. Include one only when the employer explicitly asks, which happens in aviation, acting, modelling, and some client-facing hospitality roles.
How do I know if my resume is ATS friendly?
Test it, because visual inspection proves nothing. Press Ctrl+A on your PDF; if text does not highlight, parsers read nothing. Then run it through an ATS checker against a real job description. myjobb's free checker scores keyword coverage, quantified bullets, action verbs, and structure, and shows exactly what to fix.
