Java Developer

Job Description

We are looking for a seasoned Staff Java Developer to join the Checkout team supporting highly critical, Tier 0 systems within the store checkout environment.

This individual will be a hands-on engineer responsible for independently owning clearly defined technical deliverables from requirements through production. The ideal candidate can take business requirements and acceptance criteria, translate them into robust technical solutions, and build scalable, highly available applications that support critical checkout functionality.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support applications using Java and Spring Boot
• Build and enhance highly transactional Tier 0 systems supporting the store checkout experience
• Independently own clearly defined development deliverables from requirements through production
• Translate business requirements and acceptance criteria into reliable, production-ready code
• Design and develop highly available, scalable architectures within a cloud environment
• Work with both SQL and NoSQL databases
• Develop event-driven solutions utilizing Kafka and other messaging/queue technologies
• Participate across the entire SDLC, including requirements, design, development, testing, deployment, and production support
• Take hands-on ownership of code through production and support business users once solutions are live
• Troubleshoot production issues within highly critical transactional systems
• Partner closely with other engineering teams supporting the broader checkout ecosystem
• Ensure solutions meet expectations around reliability, resiliency, scalability, and availability

Required Skills & Experience

• 5-10+ years of strong hands-on development experience with Java
• Strong experience with Spring Boot
• Experience developing and supporting high-volume, highly transactional applications
• Experience with microservices and API-based architectures
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases
• Experience building and deploying applications in a cloud environment
• Hands-on experience with Kafka or similar messaging/queue technologies
• Understanding of distributed and event-driven architectures
• Experience designing systems for high availability and resiliency
• Experience taking code from initial development through production deployment and support
• Strong understanding of the full software development lifecycle
• Ability to independently take requirements and acceptance criteria and translate them into working technical solutions

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

• Experience supporting Tier 0 or other business-critical systems
• Previous experience with retail checkout, point-of-sale, register, or high-volume transactional platforms
• Experience building applications where uptime and reliability are critical to business operations
• Experience working within complex enterprise environments with multiple interconnected systems
