Role Description The SDE I – Android HMI App role is a full-time, on-site position based in Bengaluru. This role focuses on designing, developing, and maintaining Android-based Human Machine Interface (HMI) applications that power the user experience on Simple Energy's electric scooters. Day-to-day responsibilities include implementing new features, optimizing performance, fixing bugs, and ensuring seamless integration between the Android app, vehicle systems, and backend services. The team member will collaborate closely with product managers, UI/UX designers, and hardware and firmware engineers to translate requirements into robust, user-friendly interfaces. The role also involves writing clean, maintainable code, participating in code reviews, and contributing to testing and documentation to ensure reliability and safety in real-world environments.

    What You'll Do
    • Develop and maintain HMI applications using Kotlin and modern Android development practices.
    • Build reusable Jetpack Compose screens for dashboards, charging, vehicle controls, settings and notifications.
    • Implement features within the existing architecture, following coding standards and production quality requirements.
    • Integrate REST APIs, local settings and vehicle signals through established platform interfaces.
    • Handle asynchronous updates using Coroutines and Flow, keeping UI state consistent with incoming data.
    • Implement loading, error, offline and reconnection states, with appropriate guidance on vehicle-specific behavior.
    • Support touch and joystick interactions, themes and feature availability across vehicle variants.
    • Debug defects on HMI devices using ADB, Logcat and Android Studio; investigate logs and crash reports.
    • Write unit and UI tests for assigned features and support QA during integration and release validation.
    • Participate in code reviews and collaborate with design, platform, firmware, mobile, backend and QA teams.

    Required Skills
    • 1–3 years of professional Android application development experience.
    • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics or a related engineering discipline.
    • Good proficiency in Kotlin, object-oriented programming and Jetpack Compose.
    • Hands-on experience with Android SDK, Android Studio, application lifecycle, navigation and permissions.
    • Understanding of MVVM or MVI, ViewModels, state management and separation of UI and business logic.
    • Working knowledge of Kotlin Coroutines, Flow, StateFlow and asynchronous programming.
    • Experience integrating REST APIs, parsing JSON and handling network errors.
    • Understanding of local persistence and dependency injection; familiarity with DataStore and Koin or equivalent tools.
    • Basic familiarity with CAN communication, vehicle signals or automotive system integration concepts.
    • Experience with Git, branches, pull requests and collaborative development workflows.
    • Strong debugging, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work in an existing codebase.
    Good to Have
    • Exposure to Bluetooth/BLE, GATT or connected-device communication.
    • Experience with GPS, maps or navigation SDKs such as Mappls.
    • Familiarity with JUnit, Compose UI testing, Firebase Crashlytics or Android profiling tools.
    • Exposure to Media3/ExoPlayer, Lottie, Java interoperability or custom Android system services.
    • Basic knowledge of Gradle, build variants, application signing and secure data handling.

    What We're Looking For
    • Strong problem-solving and analytical ability.
    • Good understanding of Android fundamentals beyond UI development.
    • Ability to take ownership of assigned features and deliver them with appropriate engineering guidance.
    • Ability to understand requirements and translate them into maintainable technical solutions.
    • Willingness to participate actively in design discussions and code reviews.
    • Ability to collaborate effectively with product, design, backend, QA, and other engineering teams.
    • Curiosity to learn new technologies, platforms, and domain concepts.
