About this role
Job Summary
Technavious is hiring a Mechanical Design Manager to lead the mechanical design team on large Tier III and Tier IV data center campuses for colocation and hyperscale clients, based in Chennai. The person in this role will own cooling, HVAC, plumbing and fire protection design from concept and tender through construction, commissioning and handover, so that every design is reliable, energy efficient and easy to build and maintain. The work is office based with regular site exposure and client facing design reviews, and suits someone who combines deep thermal systems expertise with the ability to lead and develop engineers.
Responsibilities
- Lead pre-bid technical discussions and prepare the Basis of Design, cooling redundancy philosophy (N+1, 2N), BOQs and tender drawings for multiple bids in parallel.
- Select the right cooling architecture for each project, from chilled water, air-cooled or water cooled chillers, CRAH, fan walls and in-row units to RDHx, free cooling and direct liquid cooling with CDUs.
- Oversee heat load calculations, equipment sizing, piping and duct design, hydraulic calculations and plant room layouts for chillers, pumps, cooling towers and thermal storage.
- Lead CFD analysis of data halls and plant yards to validate airflow, containment and rack density performance.
- Oversee water supply, drainage, leak detection, sprinkler, gas suppression (Novec or FM-200) and VESDA design.
- Optimise capex, space, water usage and energy performance without compromising tier compliance, driving PUE and WUE targets.
- Run technical and commercial vendor evaluations, approve submittals and witness FATs against codes, client standards and Uptime Tier requirements.
- Coordinate mechanical design with electrical, structural, architectural and BMS or IT teams, and lead design reviews with the PMC and client.
- Resolve RFIs, support site visits, and contribute to testing and commissioning, IST and handover documentation.
- Lead, review and mentor mechanical engineers and draughtspersons, allocating work across projects and keeping milestones on schedule.
Qualifications
- B.E. or B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering.
- Between 12 and 18 years of experience in HVAC or mechanical design, including at least 6 years in data centers or comparable mission critical facilities.
- At least one completed Tier III or Tier IV data center of 20 MW or more IT load, delivered from design through execution.
- Deep knowledge of chilled water systems, precision cooling, containment, free cooling and high-density or liquid cooling.
- Sound understanding of concurrent maintainability, fault tolerance and cooling continuity, with tendering experience including DBR, BOQ preparation and vendor technical evaluation.
- Familiarity with ASHRAE (including TC 9.9), ISHRAE, NBC, NFPA, TIA-942 and the Uptime Institute Tier Standard.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, HAP or equivalent load software, and CFD tools such as 6SigmaDC or Ansys, and proven experience leading and developing a design team.
Preferred, Good to Have
- Delivery of campuses with chilled water plants and high-density or liquid cooling, or exposure to international projects (for example the Middle East) and hyperscale client standards.
- M.Tech or M.E. in Thermal Engineering or HVAC.
- Credentials such as Uptime Institute ATD, CDCS, CDCP or CDCE, IGBC AP or LEED AP, and ASHRAE or ISHRAE membership.
