Lead - Material Master Data Management (MDM)

Location: CST, Mumbai

Job Summary:

A strategic leadership role to establish and lead the Material Master Data Management function for Defence & Heavy Industries.

The Lead - MDM will build and manage a high-performing team to oversee all aspects of material master data governance, standardization, and maintenance across SAP systems, focusing on project materials, spares & assets.

Key Responsibilities:

- Maintenance and Material Data creation, cleansing, classification, verification, validation, standardization, and enrichment activities for ERP / CMMS master data management (MDM) as per SAP PM / MM module compliance

- Create, maintain, and govern SAP Material Master data, including mass updates and workflow processing.

- Form and lead a dedicated MDM team (2 - 5 members) covering entire MDM operations for the organization.

- Define MDM strategy, governance framework, and standardization processes for material attributes including Class, Type, DN/NB, Schedule, MOC, Engineering Standards (ASTM, BS, IS, JIS, DIN), Surface Treatment, End Connection, and Length.

- Drive SAP material master creation, validation, and maintenance ensuring duplicity is avoided

- Manage data migration, cleansing, and mass updates using Excel/CSV imports and SAP tools.

- Ensure compliance with industry standards and internal material specifications.

- Lead cross-functional collaboration with SCM, Engineering, Quality, and Production teams.

- Implement and manage master data quality KPIs, audit processes, and continuous improvement initiatives.

- Ensure SLA adherence, operational stability, and resolution of data and system issues.

- Monitor data quality KPIs.

- Lead continuous improvement initiatives and support system enhancements related to master data.

- Guide team members and support training, documentation, and change management activities.

- Master equipment list (MEL) / asset register preparation and maintenance

- Develop and populate functional locations, its descriptions and object types.

- Identify maintenance spares from vendor documents. Review recommendation of new spares from vendor documents and spare parts inter-changeability record

- MRO Spares Coding and develop Bill of Materials (BOM)

- MRO spares criticality analysis and optimization.

Required Experience & Skills:

Experience:

- 10 - 15 years in Material Master Data Management, preferably in Shipbuilding/ EPC/ manufacturing/ oil & gas/ pipes & fittings industry.

- 5+ years leading MDM teams with SAP ECC/ SAP S4 HANA implementation experience.

- Proven track record building MDM functions

Technical Expertise:

- Expert in SAP MM Material Master (MM01/MM02), classification, and variant configuration.

- Advanced Excel, CSV processing, and data validation for large datasets.

- Deep knowledge of equipment/ piping materials / Electrical items / consumables/ bulk materials / other engineering materials and applicable engineering standards.

Leadership Skills:

- Ability to recruit, train, and develop MDM specialists.

- Strong project management for data standardization initiatives.

- Excellent stakeholder management across technical and business functions.

Educational Qualifications:

- B.E./ B.Tech in any stream.

- SAP MM certification advantageous.
