About this role
Job Summary
P2 is the core ownership level of the R2R role framework, sitting between the P1 & P3 roles, with independent ownership of close activities and balance sheet accounts. This document defines the P2 Assistant Manager General Ledger role within the R2R function, which delivers Month-End Close (MEC), Reconciliations, Financial Reporting, Governance and Continuous Improvement for global accounting operations. The role goes beyond execution: it investigates root causes, resolves issues without close supervision, performs meaningful variance and trend analysis, and partners regularly with entity controllers and business partners. P2s review the work of P1 analysts, support their onboarding, and begin to contribute to process improvement and automation. Success is measured by on-time, accurate delivery of owned deliverables, reconciliation health and the quality of insight provided to stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Month-End Close (MEC): Independently plans and executes owned close activities (accruals, provisions, intercompany, cut-off and allocations) to the calendar; tracks dependencies; escalates risks early with proposed solutions; contributes to post-close lessons learned.
- Journal Entry Management: Prepares standard and moderately complex journals (accruals, reclassifications, provisions, FX revaluation) with full support; reviews journals prepared by P1s; ensures compliance with policy and approval thresholds.
- Balance Sheet Reconciliations: Owns reconciliations for assigned accounts, including medium and high-risk accounts; ensures timely preparation, certification and evidence in Account Reconciliation Cloud Services (ARCS); investigates and resolves reconciling items; reviews P1 reconciliations.
- Open Item Management: Manages aging and clearance of open items across owned accounts; drives action with owners in the business and finance; escalates items beyond threshold with root cause and a clearance plan; reports the aging trend.
- Financial Reporting: Prepares and reviews management and statutory reporting inputs, schedules and disclosures; ensures reporting accuracy and consistency with the ledger; supports consolidation and group reporting submissions.
- Variance Analysis: Performs month-on-month, actual-versus-budget and forecast variance analysis; identifies drivers and root causes; writes concise commentary for controllers and business partners; recommends corrective actions.
- Governance & Controls: Operates and evidences key controls for owned processes; performs self-assessments; identifies control gaps and proposes remediation; ensures adherence to policy, SOX or equivalent requirements and segregation of duties.
- Audit Support: Prepares audit documentation for owned accounts; responds to internal and external auditors directly on routine queries; supports remediation of findings.
- Stakeholder Management: Acts as the day-to-day contact for entity controllers and business partners on owned areas; sets expectations on timelines and data needs; manages escalations on a first-line basis.
- Continuous Improvement: Identifies recurring errors, bottlenecks and manual effort in owned processes; implements local improvements; updates procedures and desk instructions; participates in Lean or Six Sigma activities.
- Digital & Automation Adoption: Maximises Account Reconciliation Cloud Services (ARCS) auto-matching and workflow features; builds and uses Excel and Power BI tools to improve analysis; documents requirements for automation candidates and supports testing and user acceptance.
Required Technical Skills
- General Accounting: Strong command of the accounting cycle including accruals, provisions, fixed assets, intercompany, FX and cut-off; applies sound judgement on standard transactions.
- IFRS / US GAAP: Working knowledge of the standards that affect owned accounts (revenue, leases, provisions, financial instruments, FX); applies policy correctly and recognises when to seek technical guidance.
- MEC Management: Plans and manages own close deliverables, dependencies and cut-off; anticipates delays and recovers the schedule.
- Balance Sheet Reconciliations: Applies reconciliation policy, risk ratings and aging thresholds; resolves complex reconciling items; reviews reconciliations prepared by others.
- Financial Reporting: Prepares management and statutory reporting schedules; understands the link between the ledger, consolidation and published reporting.
- Variance Analysis: Decomposes variances into price, volume, timing and one-off drivers; challenges explanations; writes clear commentary.
