Role & responsibilities

Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced and technically strong Design Head to lead the Mechanical Design & Engineering function for industrial automation projects.

The candidate will be responsible for design planning, team management, concept development, detailed engineering, design validation and timely execution of Special Purpose Machines (SPMs), robotic automation, assembly lines, inspection systems and customized automation solutions.

The ideal candidate should have strong experience in industrial automation machine design, mechanical engineering, project execution and team leadership.

Key Responsibilities

1. Design & Engineering

• Lead the complete mechanical design cycle from concept to final machine design.
• Develop concepts for SPMs, robotic automation, assembly machines, inspection machines and customized automation systems.
• Prepare and review 3D models, 2D drawings, assemblies and detailed manufacturing drawings.
• Ensure designs are practical, reliable, cost-effective and suitable for manufacturing and assembly.
• Review GD&T, tolerances, fits, material selection and manufacturing feasibility.
• Standardize machine components and design practices wherever possible.

2. Team Leadership

• Lead and manage the Mechanical Design team.
• Allocate projects and responsibilities according to team capability and project priorities.
• Review team performance, design quality and project timelines.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to design engineers.
• Develop the technical capabilities of the design team through training and knowledge sharing.
• Coordinate with junior and senior designers to ensure timely completion of projects.

3. Project Design Management

• Plan design activities according to project schedules and customer requirements.
• Ensure timely release of drawings and BOMs for manufacturing and procurement.
• Monitor design progress and resolve technical issues.
• Coordinate with Production, Tool Room, Electrical, PLC, Purchase and Project teams.
• Participate in design reviews, machine trials, FAT and customer discussions.

4. Customer & Technical Coordination

• Understand customer requirements and convert them into practical engineering solutions.
• Participate in technical discussions with customers.
• Review customer specifications, layouts and technical documents.
• Provide technical solutions for design changes and customer requirements.
• Support the Sales team during technical discussions and new project development.

5. Design Quality & Cost Control

• Review designs for functionality, safety, manufacturability and maintainability.
• Optimize machine design to reduce manufacturing and assembly costs.
• Minimize design errors, rework and material wastage.
• Ensure proper BOM accuracy and drawing standards.
• Develop and maintain standard design libraries and templates.

6. Innovation & Improvement

• Develop innovative and cost-effective automation concepts.
• Identify opportunities for improving machine performance and cycle time.
• Promote standardization and modular design.
• Improve design processes and engineering documentation.
• Stay updated with new technologies, components and automation practices.

Required Technical Skills

• Strong knowledge of mechanical machine design.
• Proficiency in SolidWorks / AutoCAD / Creo / Inventor or equivalent CAD software.
• Good understanding of pneumatic systems and automation components.
• Knowledge of bearings, linear guides, actuators, gearboxes, motors and mechanical power transmission.
• Knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack-up and engineering drawings.
• Understanding of fabrication, machining, VMC/CNC, sheet metal and assembly processes.
• Ability to prepare and review BOMs and technical documentation.
• Good understanding of machine safety and design standards.

Qualification & Experience

• Qualification: BE/B.Tech/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering / Mechatronics or related field.
• Experience: 1015+ years preferred in Industrial Automation / SPM / Robotics / Machine Design.
• Minimum 3–5 years of experience in a Design Lead / Design Manager / Design Head role preferred.
• Candidates with experience in complete automation machine development will be preferred.
