About this role
Job Title: User Perspective Testing Engineer Location: Chennai Reports To: Director / Software Validation Manager Role Summary The User Perspective Testing Engineer is responsible for validating vehicle software and user-facing features from an end-user experience standpoint rather than solely against customer requirements or specification compliance. This role focuses on evaluating the overall usability, robustness, stability, intuitiveness, and quality perception of the software as experienced by real users. The engineer acts as the final critical evaluator of the system, aggressively stressing features and vehicle functions under normal, abnormal, and edge-case scenarios to identify usability gaps, performance issues, visual defects, functional inconsistencies, and system stability concerns. This role is expected to provide actionable user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) improvement recommendations to the OEM, ensuring the delivered software provides a seamless and premium user experience. Key Responsibilities
- Perform end-to-end user perspective testing of vehicle software features, evaluating the actual customer experience beyond formal requirement verification.
- Validate the usability, intuitiveness, responsiveness, and consistency of infotainment, cluster, connectivity, HMI, and vehicle software functions from the viewpoint of an end user.
- Identify gaps between feature implementation and expected customer perception, highlighting opportunities to improve usability, discoverability, and overall user satisfaction.
- Execute exploratory testing and real-world user journey evaluations to uncover issues not captured by traditional requirement-based validation activities.
- Conduct aggressive stress, endurance, and robustness testing of vehicle software systems by intentionally exercising edge cases, abnormal operating conditions, repeated user actions, and unexpected workflows.
- Ensure software is free from critical customer-visible defects including system hangs, freezes, crashes, resets, application failures, sluggish response, graphical corruption, and feature lockups.
- Verify UI quality and consistency across the vehicle platform, including screen transitions, animations, icons, typography, spacing, text truncation, localization, alignment, visibility, and layout integrity.
- Assess feature behavior during vehicle state transitions such as ignition cycles, sleep/wake events, connectivity changes, profile switching, language changes, software updates, and system recovery scenarios.
- Provide detailed UI/UX improvement recommendations to OEM and engineering teams based on testing observations and benchmark studies.
- Challenge system designs and feature implementations from a customer viewpoint, advocating for simplification, improved workflows, and enhanced user interaction models.
- Perform benchmark evaluations against competitor systems and industry-leading user experiences to identify enhancement opportunities.
- Document customer-impacting issues with clear reproduction procedures, severity assessment, usability impact, and improvement recommendations.
- Collaborate closely with software development, system engineering, HMI design, validation, and customer teams to drive issue resolution and product improvements.
- Participate in software release assessments and provide final quality recommendations based on perceived user experience and product robustness.
- Act as the final "critical customer representative" prior to software release approval, ensuring a production-ready customer experience.
- Ensure no software release receives final approval until critical user experience defects, UI inconsistencies, system stability concerns, and customer-perceivable quality issues are adequately addressed.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by establishing best practices, evaluation criteria, and user-focused validation methodologies. Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, Automotive Engineering, Human Factors Engineering, or a related field.
- Proven experience in automotive software validation, HMI testing, infotainment testing, system testing, or user experience evaluation.
- Strong understanding of vehicle electronics, infotainment systems, digital cockpit platforms, connected services, and embedded software architectures.
- Experience in exploratory testing, robustness testing, stress testing, and customer-focused validation activities.
- Good understanding of user experience principles, human-machine interface design, and usability evaluation techniques.
- Ability to identify customer-perceived quality issues and translate observations into actionable engineering improvements.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to influence software, UX, and OEM stakeholders.
- Experience working with vehicle-level validation, software release processes, and defect management tools.
- Passion for delivering exceptional customer experiences and challenging systems beyond conventional validation boundaries. Key Success Metrics
- Zero critical customer-facing software crashes, hangs, or resets after release approval.
- Reduction in customer-reported usability and UI-related issues.
- Number and effectiveness of UI/UX improvements adopted by OEMs.
- Detection of critical issues before production release.
- Overall customer-perceived quality and software stability improvement.
- Improvement in software robustness under stress and edge-case conditions.
- Positive feedback from OEM stakeholders regarding user experience insights and recommendations.
