About Elan & Earth Founded in 2024, Elan & Earth (www.elanandearth.com.au) is an Australian-based high-growth, entirely boot-strapped premium lifestyle brand that offers hand-woven Rugs & Runners for Australian spaces. Operating under an agile international framework, the company is headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, with its core operational & marketing hub located in Hyderabad, India. We design, manufacture, and distribute architectural-grade handknotted, handloomed, and flatwoven rugs made from sustainably sourced premium New Zealand wool, bamboo silk, and natural fibers catering B2C ecommerce, and B2B trade partnership.
Role Purpose To own and lead the end-to-end design, CAD development, and physical sampling lifecycle for Elan & Earth’s product portfolio. This dual-focused role requires an innovative textile designer who can independently forecast Australian design trends to launch in-house catalog ranges, while seamlessly converting bespoke architectural briefs from our B2B Trade Partners into technically precise, cost-optimized, production-ready rug matrices.
Core Deliverables & Expectations 1. Core Product Design & Trend Forecasting
- Catalog Conception: Independently research global and Australian interior architecture/lifestyle trends to conceptualize new seasonal collections, defining the visual theme, pattern language, and style.
- Multifunctional Range Construction: Conceptualize and build structural designs across all core categories: handknotted carpets, handloomed textures, handtufted carvings, and flatweave durries/runners.
- Continuous Innovation: Constantly explore innovative textures, multi-level pile heights, unique edge finishes, fringe alternatives, and eco-friendly constructions. 2. CAD Layout & Technical Artwork Development
- Production Map Generation: Generate exact, knot-by-knot or loop-by-loop technical design maps (graphs) using specialized software (NedGraphics/Galaincha) ensuring weavers execute patterns perfectly.
- Artwork Engineering: Establish detailed scale variations, complex colorways, repeat patterns, and precise technical design sheets for complex custom geometries (e.g., irregular shapes, organic curved silhouettes).
- Design Documentation & Version Control: Maintain a meticulously organized, secure digital design library containing complete records of CAD files, yarn specs, and construction sheets with strict archiving workflows. 3. Product Sampling & Color Engineering
- Cross-Functional Supervision: Act as the technical bridge between design and factory floor. Coordinate directly with India-based merchandising, production, weaving, tufting, and dyeing teams to bring drawings to life.
- Strike-off & Sample Approvals: Supervise sample execution to ensure an accurate translation of the original digital design. Review and formally sign off on strike-offs, loom samples, and production proofs.
- Yarn & Dyeing Alignment: Select optimal fiber blends (New Zealand wool, cotton, viscose, bamboo silk, jute, PET recycled fibers) and coordinate with dyeing teams to lock down exact color matching against target references (Pantone/ARS). 4. B2B Trade Partner Customization & Pitching
- Architect Brief Deconstruction: Interpret technical briefs, space elevations, and interior mood boards supplied by premium Australian architects.
- High-Fidelity Room Mockups: Produce texture-accurate 3D renders and situational room layout mockups, allowing trade clients to visualize material behavior under realistic lighting.
- Commercial Pitch Support: Package designs into clean, client-facing presentation decks detailing design narratives, fiber performance characteristics, and care considerations.
- Costing Optimization: Design products consciously within target commercial parameters, maximizing material utilization and recommending alternative constructions to meet specific B2B volume price-points without compromising the luxury finish. Requirements & Competencies
- Educational Background: Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Textile Design, Carpet/Rug Design, or closely related discipline from a premier institution (e.g., NIFT, NID, or international equivalent).
- Industry Experience: 2–5 years of proven experience designing handmade rugs and carpets for international export markets or premium retail houses.
- Rug Construction Literacy: Comprehensive, practical knowledge of traditional rug craftsmanship; you must intimately understand the material properties, limitations, and performance thresholds of handknotted, handloom, handtufted, and flatwoven techniques.
- Software Fluency: Expert proficiency in specialized rug CAD applications (
NedGraphics/Texcelle or Galaincha are heavily preferred), along with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
- Aesthetic Sensitivity: A stellar portfolio displaying strict alignment with Elan & Earth's core design DNA—minimalism, organic high-low textures, sophisticated earthen color palettes, and understated, timeless luxury.
