What you need to know about the role- AI Ops Engineering, part of PayPal s Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) organization, is seeking a Software Engineer to help build and grow our AI based Reliability Solutions Practice.

PayPal SRE is a continuous engineering discipline that combines software development and systems engineering to build and run scalable, distributed, fault-tolerant systems. The SRE team works together to drive continuous improvement in capacity and performance. AI Ops Engineering team enables innovation and builds enterprise-wide platforms to support reliability.
Essential Responsibilities
- Implements tasks within the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), receiving structure and oversight from more experienced staff
- Follows well-established internal conventions and standard procedures
- Understands internal standards processes an applies them to make technical decisions
- Collaborates with peers, manager, and project lead to gain understanding of tasks and review solutions
- May contribute to code design reviews
- 1+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor s degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
In this role, you ll build scalable, reliable platforms and services that strengthen system reliability and improve engineering productivity across PayPal s Site Reliability Engineering organization. Your work will enable automation at scale, reduce operational toil, and deliver real-time insights that help engineers across the business. Familiarity with AI or GenAI is a plus, and you ll have opportunities to apply it where it adds value.
As an engineer in AI Ops Engineering, you ll contribute to how reliability engineering evolves at PayPal, helping shape architecture, best practices, and product direction. You ll be part of a collaborative, high-performance team that brings modern technology into mission-critical environments.
Your day to day
In your day-to-day role, you will:
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and platforms for Site Reliability use cases using Java.
- Build and deploy production-grade applications and RESTful APIs that are scalable, secure, and maintainable.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, infrastructure, and SRE teams to translate reliability pain points into effective engineering solutions.
- Contribute to system design and architecture decisions that ensure scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
- Write clean, well-tested code, participate in code reviews, and follow engineering best practices.
- Share knowledge within the team.
- Where relevant, explore opportunities to apply AI/GenAI to improve automation and engineering workflows.
- A Bachelor s or Master s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3+ years of experience designing, developing, and deploying scalable software
- Experience with front-end technologies such as React.js or Node.js.
- Strong Java coding skills, with hands-on experience building scalable applications and services.
- Experience with RESTful APIs, microservices, and cloud platforms.
- Solid understanding of system design principles and experience with large-scale, fault-tolerant distributed systems.
- Experience working in Agile, fast-paced environments, with the ability to collaborate across teams.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Flexibility and willingness to learn new technologies and adapt quickly.
- Knowledge of AI/GenAI concepts such as LLMs, prompt engineering, or RAG.
- Familiarity with tools like Python, LangChain, or LLM APIs
