Software Development Engineer (SDE 2)

About the role

Key Responsibilities

• Own one or more core backend services or subsystems end-to-end (design, implementation, deployment, reliability, and evolution).
• Design and build scalable, reliable APIs and services for voice workflows, LLM pipelines, and agent orchestration.
• Drive technical design for new features and systems; write and review design docs and architecture proposals.
• Lead execution of complex, multi-component features involving multiple services and integrations.
• Make engineering trade-offs considering latency, reliability, scalability, cost, and developer velocity.
• Improve system observability, performance, and failure handling in production.
• Participate in production operations: debugging incidents, root-cause analysis, and long-term fixes.
• Proactively identify and reduce technical debt and systemic risks.
• Set and raise the bar on code quality, testing, reviews, and engineering practices.
• Mentor junior engineers and interns through code reviews, design feedback, and technical guidance.
• Work closely with product and FDE teams to translate customer and business requirements into robust technical systems.

Must Have

• 4+ years of experience building and operating backend systems in production.
• Strong proficiency in Python (or a similar backend language) and backend engineering fundamentals.
• Experience designing and building REST APIs and service-oriented systems.
• Solid understanding of system design, API design, and data modeling.
• Experience with databases (SQL/NoSQL) and performance considerations.
• Hands-on experience debugging complex production issues.
• Familiarity with cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and deployment workflows.
• Ability to work with ambiguous problem statements and drive them to clear technical execution.
• Strong ownership mindset and high engineering judgment.

Nice to Have

• Experience with real-time systems, streaming, or event-driven architectures.
• Exposure to LLM-based systems, AI pipelines, or voice/speech systems.
• Experience with Docker, CI/CD, and basic DevOps / infra practices.
• Familiarity with observability tooling (logs, metrics, tracing, alerting).
• Experience in startup or high-ownership product teams.
• Understanding of performance, cost, and reliability trade-offs in production systems.

Success in First 3-6 Months

• Take ownership of at least one core service or subsystem in the platform.
• Lead the design and delivery of a complex, production feature used by real customers.
• Make measurable improvements in reliability, latency, or system robustness.
• Become a technical owner for a key area of the Voice AI / agent stack.
• Raise code quality and engineering standards through reviews and system improvements.
• Be trusted to independently drive ambiguous problems from problem statement to design to production.
