Senior Software Engineer - Mainframe Developer

As a Software Engineer within Optum Technology, you will be a key contributor to building, maintaining, and modernizing critical healthcare applications. In this role, you will work directly with robust mainframe processing systems while incorporating cutting-edge AI solutions and enterprise automations to enhance platform capability, reliability, and efficiency. You will collaborate with cross-functional technical teams to engineer scalable mainframe software, streamline development workflows using enterprise AI capabilities, and ensure our critical systems deliver seamless service for millions of members and care providers.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, test, and deploy mainframe software applications utilizing COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2, VSAM, File-AID, Abend-AID, and REXX to support core health business operations
• Leverage enterprise-approved AI tools to streamline software engineering workflows, automate routine mainframe testing/maintenance, and drive continuous operational improvement
• Evaluate emerging technology trends and AI integration opportunities to inform solution design, platform optimization, and mainframe modernization efforts
• Analyze complex code, troubleshoot system issues, and optimize batch and online processing performance across core mainframe applications
• Collaborate with database administrators, system architects, and business stakeholders throughout the full software development lifecycle (AIDLC)
• Maintain high standards of code quality, performance, data security, and enterprise compliance across all engineering deliverables
• Builder Responsibilities:
• Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions using no-code, low-code, and advanced platforms, translating business needs into scalable applications that enhance products, workflows, and decision-making
• Comply with all applicable Company policies, procedures, and business directives, changes including those relating to work location, team assignments, work schedules, and flexible work arrangements

Qualifications -

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
• 4+ years of professional software engineering experience in a mainframe environment, hands-on experience developing, testing, and debugging applications using COBOL, JCL, and CICS, experience working with DB2 databases and VSAM file structures and tools such as File-AID, Abend-AID, or REXX
• Demonstrated experience designing, customizing, or deploying AI-driven tools, automated workflows, or intelligent automation capabilities within technology operations
• Experience engaging across all phases of the full software development lifecycle (AI-DLC)
