Role Title: Senior Software Engineer II

JOB SUMMARY: Marriott has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Software Engineer on the Data Governance team. This role is part of the team focused on building out our data governance platform. Appropriate candidates have a passion for data, data governance, and emerging technologies with a vision for building next generation capabilities and a strong drive for success. We are looking for a highly skilled Software Engineer Lead with strong expertise in backend software development to design, build, and scale modern, cloud-native applications in the area of Privacy and Data Governance, building trust in our customers to responsibly use their data at a global scale by operationalizing privacy laws and data governance best practices. You will play a key role in architecting scalable systems, mentoring junior engineers, and driving best practices across development and operations. The ideal candidate will have deep experience working with AWS services, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and advanced database design using SQL, and keen to learn and expand into other areas of data governance such as data catalog, data quality, data lineage.

Key Responsibilities:

• 6+yrs of experience (Backend Development)
• Design, develop, and maintain robust backend services using Python (advanced level preferred) and Java
• Build scalable APIs (REST/GraphQL) and microservices
• Ensure code quality, testing, and performance optimization
• Implement authentication, authorization, and secure data handling practices
• Integrate 3rd-party SaaS tools with Marriott systems.
• Integration with Kafka and Airflow
• Provide consultation for routine and complex systems development
• Perform technical troubleshooting

Enabling Data Governance Tools:

• Learn and experiment with new data governance tools from 3rd-party vendors
• Evaluate new features
• Create technical documentation
• Provide technical support of vendor tools for our users

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• Advanced proficiency in Python and Java for backend development
• Expert-level SQL skills (complex queries, optimization, database design)
• Hands-on knowledge of AWS ecosystem (S3, EKS, EMR, Lambda, and more)
• Strong experience with ETL data processing
• Strong understanding of microservices architecture
• Proficiency in Git-based version control workflows
• Excellent problem-solving skills and system design capabilities
• Experience leading and mentoring more junior software engineers

Nice to Have / Preferred Skills:

• Familiarity with MDM tools such as Stibo, Reltio.
• Familiarity with Data Catalog tools such as Atlan, Alation, Informatica EDC
• Experience with using Snowflake database
• Experience with Airflow workflow orchestration
• Experience with Gen AI / Agentic AI systems (LLMs, prompt engineering, AI workflows)
• Experience with event-driven architecture (Kafka, SQS, SNS)
• Familiarity with monitoring & observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK)
• Exposure to ML pipelines or data engineering workflows
• Knowledge of security best practices in cloud environments
• Undergraduate/bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or a related field.
