1. Job Purpose

The Senior Resident in the Department of Physiology will support the Department in delivering high-quality undergraduate medical education through teaching, practical demonstrations, student mentoring, assessment and academic activities.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Teaching Responsibilities

• Conduct undergraduate teaching activities in Physiology as assigned by the Head of Department.
• Assist faculty members in conducting lectures, tutorials, seminars, small-group teaching and demonstrations.
• Conduct practical classes and demonstrations for MBBS students.
• Assist in teaching topics across major areas of Physiology, including:
• General Physiology
• Blood and body fluids
• Cardiovascular Physiology
• Respiratory Physiology
• Gastrointestinal Physiology
• Renal Physiology
• Endocrinology
• Reproductive Physiology
• Neurophysiology
• Exercise and environmental physiology
• Applied and clinical physiology
• Facilitate clinical correlation of physiological concepts wherever appropriate.
• Participate in integrated and interdisciplinary teaching activities.
• Assist in implementation of competency-based and student-centred teaching methodologies.
• Prepare teaching material, demonstrations and practical exercises as assigned.
• Ensure timely completion of assigned teaching responsibilities.

B. Practical & Laboratory Teaching

• Conduct and supervise Physiology practical classes under the guidance of senior faculty.
• Demonstrate physiological experiments and procedures to undergraduate students.
• Assist students in understanding experimental methods, interpretation of findings and clinical correlation.
• Ensure proper use of laboratory equipment during practical sessions.
• Follow laboratory safety procedures and institutional SOPs.
• Report malfunctioning, damage or shortage of laboratory equipment to the appropriate faculty member.
• Assist in maintaining practical records, manuals and laboratory documentation.
• Support the Department in maintaining a safe, clean and academically appropriate laboratory environment.

C. Student Mentoring & Academic Support

• Provide academic guidance and support to assigned undergraduate students.
• Assist students in understanding difficult concepts and practical applications.
• Identify students requiring additional academic support and bring the matter to the attention of the appropriate faculty member.
• Participate in remedial teaching and academic support programmes as assigned.
• Encourage professional behaviour, discipline and ethical conduct among students.
• Assist in student mentoring and counselling activities under the supervision of senior faculty.

D. Assessment & Examination Responsibilities

• Assist in conducting formative and internal assessments.
• Participate in practical examinations, viva voce and other assessments as assigned.
• Assist in preparation of MCQs, short-answer questions, practical exercises and viva questions.
• Participate in OSPE/competency-based assessment activities where applicable.
• Assist in evaluation of student performance under the supervision of senior faculty.
• Maintain confidentiality and integrity of examination and assessment processes.
• Participate in university examination duties as per institutional and university requirements.

E. Research & Academic Activities

• Participate in departmental research activities and academic projects.
• Assist faculty members in research projects, data collection, literature review and scientific documentation.
• Develop research interests and participate in scholarly activities.
• Contribute to preparation of abstracts, posters, presentations and manuscripts where appropriate.
• Participate in seminars, conferences, workshops and academic meetings.
• Maintain awareness of current developments in Physiology and medical education.
• Participate in faculty-development and continuing professional development programmes.

Educational Qualification

Medical Candidate

• MBBS from a recognised medical institution/university.
• Postgraduate degree in Physiology, such as MD/DNB in Physiology, or another qualification recognised as eligible under the prevailing NMC regulations.
• Valid medical registration as required under applicable regulations.

Non-Medical Candidate

Eligibility, if applicable, shall be determined strictly in accordance with the prevailing NMC regulations and institutional requirements.

Eligibility & Regulatory Requirements

The candidate must fulfil the eligibility requirements applicable to appointment as a Senior Resident in Physiology under the prevailing National Medical Commission regulations and any applicable university/institutional requirements.

As per the Medical Institutions (Qualifications of Faculty) Regulations, 2025:

• The Senior Resident position may be held for a maximum period of three years.
• For Senior Residents in Physiology, the specified upper age limit is 50 years.
• Any applicable provisions, amendments, clarifications or subsequent NMC notifications shall prevail at the time of appointment.
