About this role
Job Summary
The Portfolio Manager for Digital Workplace Experience manages the domains demand and portfolio of work, sequencing delivery against strategy, capacity and dependencies, and giving domain leaders a clear view of what is being delivered and when. The role runs lean portfolio management for the domain across End User Computing and Mobile Device Management, Productivity Collaboration and Global Site Experience, steers with flow metrics and OKR progress, and feeds the domain portfolio into the enterprise view.
The role orchestrates rather than decides. It owns the portfolio process, the prioritisation framework, the reporting and the transparency, and it coaches and challenges on delivery discipline. Prioritisation calls, roadmap content and value commitments remain with domain leadership and the Product Owners.
Key Responsibilities
- Run lean portfolio management for the domain, managing incoming demand through a single route and holding that route against pressure to bypass it.
- Own the prioritisation framework the domain applies, so that decisions taken by domain leadership rest on consistent criteria of value, risk, capacity, strategic fit and OKR alignment.
- Sequence delivery against strategy, capacity and cross-platform dependencies, surfacing conflicts between the workplace platforms and with cloud, network and identity capability owned elsewhere.
- Link every item of work in the portfolio to strategy and to domain OKRs, and track the outcome rather than the activity.
- Steer the portfolio with flow metrics and OKR progress, and act on the signal early rather than waiting for a milestone to slip.
- Provide portfolio reporting, forecasting and transparency to domain leaders and into the enterprise portfolio maintained by the Investment Portfolio Manager.
- Apply the central portfolio standards set by the Director, Planning Performance, so domain data is consistent and comparable with every other domain.
- Track benefits and value realisation after delivery, applying the central value framework and feeding what actually landed back into prioritisation.
- Coordinate supplier and managed service demand within the portfolio, so partner capacity is visible and sequenced alongside internal delivery.
- Run the domain portfolio governance forums, setting agenda, evidence pack and follow-up actions, and holding decisions to closure.
- Use AI tooling to accelerate portfolio analysis, dependency detection, forecasting and reporting.
- Hold the boundaries with domain leadership on prioritisation decisions, the Tech Finance Manager on cost and forecasting, the Product Owners on backlog content, and the Investment Portfolio Manager on the enterprise view.
Professional Qualifications
- Degree in a technology, engineering or business discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Portfolio or agile certifications desirable (e.g., SAFe Lean Portfolio Management, Management of Portfolios, or a recognised agile certification).
Area of Specialisation
- Portfolio and demand management, covering intake, prioritisation frameworks, sequencing and dependency management.
- Lean portfolio practice, covering flow metrics, OKR tracking and benefits realisation in a partner-delivered environment.
Experience Required
- Overall 15 years and typically 6-8 years in portfolio management, PMO or delivery management, including at least two years with domain or programme-level portfolio responsibility.
- Practical experience of lean or agile portfolio management, not traditional project portfolio reporting alone.
- Experience managing demand intake and holding a single route against pressure to bypass it.
- Experience sequencing delivery across multiple platforms with competing dependencies.
- Experience consolidating delivery, cost and roadmap information into a single reliable portfolio view.
- Experience of portfolio practice where a significant share of delivery is provided by suppliers.
- Familiarity with portfolio tooling, flow metrics and AI enabled analytics applied to forecasting and reporting.
Desirable
- Strong understanding of End User Computing (EUC), Mobile Device Management (MDM), Productivity Collaboration, and Global Site Experience capabilities.
Skills/Background
- Strong analytical skills, able to structure and compare demand, cost and capacity information across several platforms.
- Excellent facilitation skills, able to run planning and governance sessions with senior stakeholders and hold them to time.
- Well organised, able to run concurrent planning cycles to both a domain and an enterprise timetable.
- Ability to challenge incomplete inputs constructively and without formal authority.
- Understanding of partner-delivered work, so that supplier activity is represented properly in the portfolio.
