Senior OpenShift VMware Virtualization Migration Consultant Job Summary
We are seeking a Senior OpenShift VMware Virtualization Migration Consultant to lead and execute a Proof of Concept (POC) for migrating virtual machines from an existing VMware environment to OpenShift Virtualization. The role requires hands-on expertise in designing migration strategies, assessing virtualization platforms, executing workload migrations, validating outcomes, and providing recommendations for production adoption. The consultant will take end-to-end ownership of the POC, working closely with stakeholders to define architecture, assess risks, and establish a migration approach.
Key Responsibilities - Assess the current VMware virtualization estate, including virtual machine inventory, infrastructure dependencies, and migration readiness.
- Design and define the target OpenShift Virtualization architecture for the POC.
- Develop compute, storage, and network designs required to support OpenShift Virtualization workloads.
- Evaluate Linux and Windows virtual machines for migration suitability and compatibility.
- Plan and execute migration of selected workloads from VMware to OpenShift Virtualization.
- Validate migration outcomes through performance, functionality, and downtime testing.
- Design highly available and resilient OpenShift Virtualization environments.
- Assess virtualization infrastructure requirements, operational readiness, and support considerations.
- Troubleshoot migration issues across compute, storage, networking, operating systems, and applications.
- Document migration risks, limitations, dependencies, and remediation requirements.
- Provide operational support recommendations and identify skills gaps within the support organization.
- Produce effort estimates, migration approaches, and indicative timelines for production-scale adoption.
- Deliver clear go/no-go recommendations based on POC findings and outcomes.
- Collaborate with stakeholders and provide comprehensive technical documentation throughout the engagement.

- Approximately 8-10 years of infrastructure, virtualization, or platform engineering experience.
- At least 3-5 years of hands-on OpenShift experience.
- Demonstrated experience delivering VMware-to-OpenShift Virtualization migrations or comparable production POCs.
- Strong stakeholder communication and technical documentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and take end-to-end ownership of the POC.
Preferred certifications include:
- Red Hat Certified OpenShift Administrator
- Red Hat Certified Specialist in OpenShift Virtualization
- Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA) or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)
- VMware VCP or equivalent VMware certification
- Current VMware estate assessment
- OpenShift Virtualization target architecture
- Compute, storage, and network design documentation
- Workload suitability and compatibility assessment
- Successful migration of agreed Windows and Linux test workloads
- Migration test results, including performance and downtime analysis
- Risk, limitation, and remediation documentation
- Operational support and skills-gap assessment
- Production migration approach, effort estimate, and indicative timeline
- Go/no-go recommendation for OpenShift Virtualization adoption
