Senior/Lead Scala Engineer

Role Description The Senior/Lead Scala Engineer will design, implement, and maintain high-quality, scalable backend services and data processing pipelines using Scala and related frameworks. This full-time role is based in Pune in a hybrid setup, with a combination of on-site collaboration and some work-from-home flexibility. Day-to-day responsibilities include leading technical design discussions, writing clean and efficient code, performing code reviews, and ensuring adherence to best practices in performance, security, and reliability. The engineer will collaborate closely with product managers, architects, and cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions, as well as mentor and guide other engineers on the team. The role may also involve optimizing existing services, improving deployment and monitoring practices, and contributing to architectural decisions for new and existing systems.

Qualifications

• Strong proficiency in Scala and functional programming, with experience building production-grade backend services or microservices.
• Hands-on experience with JVM-based technologies and frameworks commonly used with Scala (e.g., Akka, Play, or similar) and RESTful API development.
• Knowledge of distributed systems, messaging, and data processing concepts; familiarity with event-driven architectures and streaming platforms (e.g., Kafka) is beneficial.
• Experience working with relational and/or NoSQL databases, including schema design, query optimization, and integration from Scala services.
• Background in software engineering best practices: testing (unit, integration), CI/CD pipelines, version control (Git), and code review processes.
• Ability to lead technical initiatives, mentor other engineers, and contribute to architecture and design decisions in a collaborative environment.
• Strong problem-solving skills, clear communication, and the ability to work effectively in hybrid teams across locations and time zones.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience; prior experience in a senior or lead backend/Scala role is preferred. The primary language on this team is Scala — strong engineers in either language are welcome.
