Senior Full Stack Developer

We are looking for a Senior Full-stack Developer to join VOPA's technology team and take end-to-end ownership of building, scaling, and maintaining high-impact digital products. This is a hands-on engineering role where you will work across frontend, mobile, backend, databases, and production systems to build reliable technology serving millions of learners and thousands of schools. The role involves designing and developing scalable backend services using Python/FastAPI, building web and mobile experiences using React/React Native, designing APIs and database architectures, and solving complex production and performance challenges. You will work with large-scale data, high-traffic systems, low-end devices, unreliable networks, and AI/ML-powered assessment solutions.

As a Senior Full-stack Developer, you will also contribute to technical architecture and engineering decisions, review code, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate directly with the CTO. We are looking for an engineer who can work independently, understand ambiguous problems, make sound technical decisions, debug systematically, and take ownership of delivering solutions from conception through production.

Responsibilities:

• Own features end-to-end from React/React Native interfaces to APIs, databases, and production deployment.
• Design and build scalable backend services using Python/FastAPI.
• Build reliable web and mobile experiences for low-end devices and unreliable networks.
• Design APIs, database schemas, indexes, and data flows handling millions of records.
• Debug complex production issues across frontend, backend, databases, and infrastructure.
• Improve system performance during high-traffic assessment periods.
• Integrate AI/ML services, including handwriting recognition and speech assessment pipelines.
• Review code and mentor junior engineers.
• Work directly with the CTO on architecture and engineering decisions.
• Take ownership of problems and drive them through to completion.

Requirements:

• 4+ years of strong software engineering experience.
• Strong experience with React / React Native.
• Strong backend engineering fundamentals; Python/FastAPI, Django, or Flask preferred.
• Production experience with PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or comparable databases.
• Strong understanding of APIs, authentication, caching, database indexing, and performance.
• Ability to systematically debug unfamiliar systems.
• Ability to quickly understand and contribute to an existing codebase.
• Proven experience personally owning and shipping meaningful production features.
• Comfortable using AI coding tools while being able to explain and defend the code you ship.
• React Native / Android production experience.
• Redis, queues, and asynchronous processing.
• Docker and basic Kubernetes debugging.
• Offline-first applications and synchronization.
• High-traffic or large-scale systems.
• CI/CD and cloud infrastructure.
