Senior Database Engineer – PostgreSQL Location: New Delhi | Experience: 6+ Years | Level: Senior / Lead About the Role We are looking for a Senior Database Engineer / Lead DBA with strong hands-on expertise in PostgreSQL administration, database design, performance tuning, data modelling, backup and recovery, replication, and production operations. The role requires hands-on technical ownership of PostgreSQL environments supporting applications, integration, reporting, and analytics workloads, plus the ability to guide and review junior database engineers. Key Responsibilities • Design, implement, and maintain PostgreSQL databases for application, integration, reporting, and analytics workloads • Perform core DBA activities — installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, user/role management, backup, recovery, and replication • Design and maintain schemas, indexes, partitions, constraints, views, materialized views, stored procedures, triggers, and functions • Own database architecture across transactional, staging, reporting, audit, metadata, and analytical structures • Perform query optimisation, index/execution-plan tuning, vacuum/autovacuum tuning, and workload performance analysis • Design and implement backup, PITR, replication, high availability, disaster recovery, and failover strategies • Define and enforce database standards, naming conventions, access models, migration, and change-management practices • Support database versioning/release using Flyway, Liquibase, Alembic, or equivalent • Design data ingestion, staging, reconciliation, validation, and error-handling structures • Implement database security — RBAC, least privilege, row-level security, audit logging, encryption support, and privileged access • Lead and guide junior DBAs/engineers, review their work, and assign tasks • Support CI/CD-based deployments, rollback scripts, and environment promotion • Monitor production health, troubleshoot bottlenecks, perform RCA, and maintain runbooks, ER diagrams, and configuration docs Required Qualifications • 6+ years in PostgreSQL administration, engineering, or development • Strong hands-on PostgreSQL experience in production • Strong grasp of PostgreSQL architecture — WAL, vacuum/autovacuum, replication, backup/restore, roles, indexing, partitioning, and query planning • Advanced SQL and PL/pgSQL • Strong database design, ER modelling, normalization/denormalization, and indexing strategy • Experience with performance tuning, execution-plan analysis, and database monitoring • Experience with backup, recovery, PITR, replication, HA, and DR • Experience with migration/versioning tools (Flyway, Liquibase, Alembic) • Working knowledge of Linux, shell scripting, Git, and DB tools (pgAdmin, DBeaver, psql) • Experience mentoring junior DBAs and coordinating with application, DevOps, and security teams Tools & Technologies • Database: PostgreSQL • Languages: SQL, PL/pgSQL, Shell scripting • Database Tools: pgAdmin, DBeaver, psql, pg_dump, pg_restore, pg_basebackup • Migration Tools: Flyway, Liquibase, Alembic, or equivalent • DevOps / Version Control: Git, GitLab, CI/CD pipelines • Monitoring: PostgreSQL logs, pg_stat_statements, monitoring dashboards, alerting • Operating Systems: Linux-based server environments Good to Have • PostgreSQL high availability tools and replication architectures • Read replicas, connection pooling, and reporting-database optimisation • PgBouncer, Patroni, repmgr, pg_auto_failover, pgBackRest, or Barman • Data warehouse, data lake, reporting, or analytics database workloads • ETL/ELT pipelines, data validation, reconciliation, and metadata management • Docker, Kubernetes, or containerized database environments • Secure deployment environments, audit/compliance requirements, and DevSecOps practices Preferred Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is a hands-on PostgreSQL expert who can own production databases, design scalable schemas, troubleshoot complex performance issues, implement backup and recovery strategies, and act as the primary database authority for application, integration, and analytics teams.
