About this role
This role is for a health tech specialist: a practitioner who has mastered health tech law, built real expertise through years of client work, and is ready to put that knowledge to work in a new way.
About General Legal
General Legal is an AI-native law firm built to deliver high-quality legal work faster and more predictably than traditional firms. We combine experienced, U.S.-barred attorneys with AI-native workflows to handle drafting, review, and negotiation end to end—without billable hours, bloated process, or junior handoffs. We operate like a startup because we are one. That means modern tooling, outcome-based pricing, remote-friendly work, and meaningful ownership for the people doing the work. By using AI to make the routine parts of contracting effortless, we give our attorneys the space to focus on judgment, negotiation, and advising clients on what actually matters. We’re building a modern law firm where great lawyers can do their best work—and help reshape how legal services are delivered.
About the Role
We're building out a dedicated health tech practice, and we're looking for an attorney who has spent their career going deep on this vertical — not broad.
You'll sit directly with our health tech clients, serving as their primary point of contact for the full range of healthcare-related legal needs: HIPAA and health data privacy guidance, FDA and digital health regulatory questions, and reviewing and negotiating BAAs and other healthcare-specific contracts. You'll also help build the institutional infrastructure that makes everyone around you sharper: reviewing and improving our BAA and healthcare contract templates, developing precedent libraries, and training attorneys who run into healthcare questions in the course of their broader work.
If you're the kind of lawyer who genuinely loves the craft of healthcare law, keeps up with every regulatory development, and finds real satisfaction in being the go-to resource for a growing group of health tech companies, this was built for you.
What You'll Do:
Client Work
Sit directly with our health tech clients as a trusted advisor across HIPAA, compliance, and other healthcare regulatory questions, providing guidance that reflects current law, real-world practice, and seasoned judgment
Review and negotiate BAAs and other healthcare-specific contracts, including vendor, data-sharing, and health data agreements
Serve as a trusted subject matter resource for both clients and internal attorneys on healthcare and health tech questions
Knowledge Development
Review, revise, and improve our BAA and healthcare contract templates and standard documents
Build a healthcare and health tech precedent library that reflects current best practices, and integrate it into the product
Develop training materials and lead sessions for other attorneys who encounter healthcare questions in the course of their broader work
Contribute to internal knowledge databases with practical, usable healthcare guidance — not just legal citations
What We're Looking For
Background & Experience
J.D. from an accredited law school; active bar membership in good standing
8+ years of deep, focused experience in healthcare regulatory and health tech transactional work — ideally with a track record that includes top-tier firm work, a leading in-house health tech role, or a regulatory agency background
Hands-on experience drafting and negotiating BAAs and other healthcare-specific contracts
Encyclopedic knowledge of HIPAA, FDA, and digital health regulatory frameworks, and the kind of current awareness that comes from genuinely caring about the space
Real enthusiasm for teaching and knowledge-sharing — you're not protective of what you know, you want to multiply it
Comfortable working with attorneys across experience levels, from first-year associates to senior partners
Clear, confident communicator who can translate regulatory complexity into practical guidance for health tech founders and teams
How You Work
You are fast and good
You know how to draft and revise a BAA in your sleep
You live and breathe health regulatory frameworks
You use AI tools in your practice today, not theoretically
You produce clean, sophisticated work product
You communicate directly: clear recommendations, appropriate caveats, no filler
Why This Role
The best healthcare attorneys often find themselves doing work that underutilizes what they actually know, buried in generalist matters, isolated in a narrow advisory function, or constantly starting from scratch because there's no institutional memory to build on.
This role is different. You'll spend your time on the healthcare and health tech work you're actually expert in, sitting directly with the clients who need that expertise, with the added dimension of shaping how that expertise lives in the organization long after any individual matter is closed.
We are an equal opportunity employer and are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team.
Engagement Options
We recognize that the best specialists don't always fit a standard mold. This role is open to:
Full-time employees seeking a primary position
Part-time employees looking for meaningful, substantive work at reduced hours
Contract arrangements for specialists who prefer to maintain an independent practice
Compensation is pro-rated for part-time arrangements. All engagement types are eligible for the same quality of work, access, and integration with our team.
The Structure
This is a remote-first role with annual in-person on-sites for team collaboration, planning, and the occasional celebration. We trust you to do your best work from wherever you do your best work!
Salary
$200,000 - $240,000 per year for full time
$100-$115 per hour for contractors
