About the Role We are looking for a
Ruby on Rails Engineer to join our backend engineering team as an individual contributor. In this role, you will design, build, and maintain production-grade systems that power core platform capabilities such as learner enrollment, order management, and payments. This is a hands-on engineering role where you will own features end-to-end from technical design and development to testing, deployment, and production support within a multi-service Rails ecosystem. We are actively investing in AI-assisted engineering and AI-powered product capabilities. The ideal candidate is not only comfortable leveraging AI tools in their daily workflow but is also excited about shaping how AI integrates into real-world products. You will contribute to building reliable, user-facing AI features going beyond usage to actively influencing how AI enhances product experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement backend features across enrollment, orders, payments, and related services
- Own feature development end-to-end, ensuring clean, maintainable, and well-tested Ruby code
- Build, document, and maintain APIs, including keeping documentation up to date
- Collaborate with product, QA, and engineering teams on cross-service workflows
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering best practices and standards
- Investigate and resolve production issues while improving overall system reliability
- Leverage AI tools to enhance development efficiency and team productivity
- Explore and prototype AI-powered capabilities that deliver meaningful user or developer value
Key Skills, Qualifications and Competencies
- 3–5 years of experience building and shipping Ruby on Rails applications in production
- Strong fundamentals in Ruby, Rails conventions, and object-oriented design
- Solid experience with PostgreSQL (schema design, migrations, indexing, query optimization)
- Proficiency in building and consuming RESTful/JSON APIs
- Experience writing automated tests (RSpec preferred) and maintaining critical test coverage
- Ability to work independently as an individual contributor, with strong ownership and execution skills
- Strong debugging capabilities across application code, background jobs, and databases
- Effective written communication for code reviews, technical documentation, and async collaboration
- Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Copilot, Cursor, Claude) to improve coding, testing, debugging, and documentation
- Ability to critically evaluate AI-generated outputs, write effective prompts, and ensure high-quality, maintainable code
- Strong understanding of secure AI usage practices (protecting sensitive data, credentials, and PII)
- Demonstrated interest in building AI-powered products or tooling, with curiosity about integrating AI into backend systems responsibly
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with
microservices or multi-app ecosystems
- Knowledge of
payment gateway integrations (Stripe or similar)
- Experience with modular monoliths, or component-based Rails architectures
- Exposure to OpenAPI-driven API development
- Experience with feature flags, A/B testing, or gradual rollouts
- Prior work in
high-traffic, revenue-critical systems
What Success Looks Like Within your first six months, you will independently ship production features within at least one Rails application, demonstrating strong ownership through robust test coverage and clear documentation. You will confidently navigate cross-service workflows and be a visible practitioner of AI-augmented engineering, delivering faster without compromising quality, while also contributing meaningfully to at least one initiative focused on AI tooling or product innovation.
