Roku GCP S&R - Senior Backend Engineer - Java

About the role
You will join a client engineering team at a global streaming platform as an embedded contractor from GlobalLogic's Bangalore centre. The client is making its search, recommendation and browse workloads portable across two public clouds. Your job is to carry service migrations and shared-library adoption through to reviewed, tested merge requests using reference implementations and AI-assisted tooling the client provides. Experience: 5–9 years. Location: Bangalore (hybrid).

What we're looking for
A hands-on backend engineer who can work from a reference pattern without the original author redesigning it. You explain your changes, diagnose failed checks from logs and metrics, and know when to ask for a design decision instead of guessing.

Must have skills

• 5+ years of Java backend development on production microservices.
• Working knowledge of Python for supporting services or tooling.
• Containers, Helm and Kubernetes deployment basics; ability to diagnose failed rollouts.
• CI/CD with GitLab CI or an equivalent system.
• Understanding of AWS services used by typical backend services (compute, storage, queues, key-value databases) and their identity model.
• Strong unit, integration and parity testing habits.
• Clear written English for merge requests, runbooks and status updates.

Nice to have skills

• Experience migrating workloads between cloud providers, especially to GCP.
• Terraform or other infrastructure as code.
• Experience with centrally managed dynamic configuration systems.
• Prior use of AI coding assistants with disciplined review practices.
• Exposure to search, ranking or catalogue services.

What you'll do

• Move assigned backend services from a container-orchestration service to a managed Kubernetes platform by updating configuration, Helm charts and CI/CD pipelines.
• Replace direct cloud-provider SDK calls with approved portable interfaces, and update clients, dependencies and tests.
• Migrate consumers of centrally managed configuration and database clients as designs are approved.
• Write smoke, integration and regression tests; document rollout checks, monitoring and rollback.
• Use the approved AI skill to speed up inventory, code changes and tests, then inspect, reproduce and explain every change.
• Record the reference or skill version and test results in each merge request, and flag exceptions to the client reviewer.
