About this role
Job Summary
Podcast Bengaluru
You report on what India s biggest companies are doing and why, write the Two by Two newsletter every week under your own name, and help make one of India s leading business podcasts, with a path to hosting episodes of your own.
Bengaluru; full-time; 2 to 3 years of experience.
About the role
Two by Two is The Ken s weekly business strategy podcast. Each episode takes one question about how an Indian company or market works, finds the tension inside it, and argues it out with the people who know: analysts, founders, operators, and The Ken s own reporters. Recent episodes asked why Swiggy is cutting parts of itself to survive and what Meituan s fight in China says about it, what Irdai s commission reset means for the insurance apps, whether India is ready for personal AI agents, and whether Nykaa can get fashion right the second time. Every episode ends on a 2 2: two forces, four quadrants, and the companies placed on it. It has run for more than 100 episodes and has an audience that argues back.
The show has grown on its host s reporting, done alongside another job. That shows in two places. The research behind each episode could go deeper, and the show s written form is thinner than its spoken one, so listeners can t easily skim, quote, or forward it, and readers who don t listen to podcasts rarely find it.
This role fixes both. You ll do the reporting that feeds each episode, write a weekly newsletter that stands on its own, and over the year move from the research desk onto the tape. For someone two or three years into journalism, it s a rare thing: a show with an audience, a byline subscribers will know, and a voice they ll recognise.
What you will do
- Watch the companies. Keep a running read on the companies and markets the show covers: results, filings, earnings calls, regulatory moves, launches, exits. Talk to analysts, operators, investors, and former employees every week, and build the sources an episode needs before it needs them.
- Write the Two by Two newsletter. Every week, under your byline, edited by the desk. It s reported, and it carries what tape can t: the numbers, the table, the 2 2 drawn out, the passage worth reading twice, the claim a guest made that didn t hold up. Someone who never listens should still want it.
- Pitch the next episode. Bring two or three ideas a week, each built around a tension: two forces pulling a company in different directions, and why this is the week. The host decides what runs; over the year, more of the slate should start with you.
- Build the brief. For every episode: sourced facts, how we got here, what The Ken and the show have already said about it, candidate tensions with the strongest case for each, and the questions that open territory. When the facts say the premise is wrong, say so on the first line.
- Find and prepare the guests. Work out who can argue each side, reach them, explain the episode, and prepare them so the conversation starts at the interesting part.
- Get on air. Start with reported segments and conversations with the host on episodes where your reporting leads. By the end of your first year, host or co-host episodes of your own.
- Check what goes out. Every number, name, and claim in the brief and the newsletter, against the source and against what was said on tape. Flag what needs a correction before anyone records or publishes it.
- Read your numbers. Opens, replies, listens, and completion, which episodes and editions brought people to The Ken. Change the format because of them.
What we are looking for
- 2 to 3 years as a reporter, ideally covering business, technology, or policy. We care more about stories you got and sources you built than where you worked.
- You ve broken or materially moved a business story, and you can explain how you got it.
- You can read an annual report, an earnings call, and a regulator s consultation paper and find the number that matters in each.
- You think in tensions. Name a company in the news this week and you can say what two forces are pulling at it.
- You write clean copy fast, and you can take a hard edit from the desk without losing your voice.
- You re comfortable hearing your own voice on tape, or you re willing to sound rough for a while on the way to sounding good.
- You can ask an analyst or a founder the question they d rather not answer, politely, and ask it again.
- You read numbers on your own work and change what you do because of them.
- You use AI tools for the grunt work and still form your own view.
- Bonus: audio experience of any kind, a newsletter of your own, or a beat in consumer internet, fintech, or regulation.
What you get
A byline and a voice on one of India s leading business podcasts, two or three years into your career. A show with more than 100 episodes behind it and an audience that already listens and argues. The host in the room with you every week. A hard edit from a desk that has set the standard for business journalism in India. The Ken s archive and reporters to draw on, and tools that search every past episode s transcript in seconds. And at the end of a year, a body of reported work with your name on it, in two forms, and the beginnings of a following of your own.
