Principal Consultant - MDM & Data Governance (Microsoft Stack)

About this Role :

We are seeking a senior, hands-on Principal Consultant MDM & Data Governance for a leading US InsurTech client to define and establish Master Data Management (MDM) and Data Governance standards for a flagship insurance data transformation initiative.

You will design the framework that ensures data quality, consistency, governance, security, and compliance within an ecosystem built on Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, and Microsoft Purview.

This role spans the entire data pipelinefrom Lakehouse architecture and master data harmonization to governed Power BI semantic models optimized for Natural Language Modeling (NLM) and AI capabilities such as Copilot.

Key Responsibilities:

MDM Strategy & Microsoft Fabric Alignment

• Define master data domains and establish entity resolution and matching rules for core insurance domains, including:
• Policy
• Claims
• Customer / Party
• Producer / Agent
• Define standards for mastering, harmonizing, and managing data within the Microsoft Fabric Lakehouse/Warehouse using Delta Lake before it reaches analytical layers.
• Establish standards for complex insurance hierarchies, including householding and producer networks, to ensure consistency across reporting and analytics.

Microsoft Fabric & Purview Governance Framework

• Design the enterprise data governance operating model using Microsoft Purview.
• Establish standards for automated:
• Data discovery
• Data classification
• Data cataloging
• Define standards for end-to-end automated data lineage across:
• Microsoft Fabric pipelines
• Dataflows Gen2
• Power BI semantic models
• Design data profiling rules, data quality controls, and DQ guardrails using Microsoft Fabric's native capabilities or integrated validation frameworks.

Power BI Semantic & NLM Governance

• Define governance standards for Power BI Semantic Models, including:
• Direct Lake
• Import mode
• DAX formulations
• Enterprise KPI definitions
• Ensure consistency and a single version of the truth across enterprise reporting and analytics.
• Establish data modeling and linguistic governance standards to support Natural Language Modeling (NLM) and Copilot capabilities.
• Define standards for:
• Q&A tooling
• Synonyms
• Metadata annotations
• Ensure semantic model design supports downstream AI, Q&A visuals, NLM dashboard discovery, and Copilot capabilities.

Compliance & Security

• Define enterprise data classification and information protection standards using Microsoft Purview Information Protection.
• Establish standards for:
• Sensitivity labels
• Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies
• Information protection across Microsoft Fabric artifacts
• Define unified security standards for:
• Row-Level Security (RLS)
• Object-Level Security (OLS)
• Ensure security standards are implemented consistently across the Lakehouse, Semantic Layer, and Power BI dashboards.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

• Minimum 8+ years of experience in data management.
• Minimum 5 years of experience specifically within the Insurance sector, including one or more of:
• Property & Casualty (P&C)
• Life Insurance
• Health Insurance
• Proven experience defining enterprise data standards using the Microsoft data and analytics stack, including:
• Microsoft Fabric
• Azure Synapse / Azure Data Factory
• Power BI
• Deep, practical experience configuring and standardizing Microsoft Purview for enterprise deployments.

Technical & Functional Skills:

• Strong expertise in Master Data Management (MDM) and Data Governance.
• Deep understanding of insurance industry data models and standards, including ACORD.
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Fabric architecture and components, including:
• OneLake
• Lakehouse
• Warehouse
• Direct Lake mode
• Strong understanding of:
• Data quality
• Data lineage
• Data cataloging
• Data classification
• Metadata management
• Entity resolution and matching
• Master data harmonization
• Strong knowledge of Power BI Semantic Models, DAX, enterprise KPI governance, RLS, and OLS.
• Understanding of how semantic model design impacts downstream:
• AI capabilities
• Q&A visuals
• Natural Language Modeling
• Dashboard discovery
• Microsoft Copilot

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for a senior, hands-on data professional with demonstrated experience in:

• Defining and implementing enterprise MDM and Data Governance frameworks.
• Establishing master data standards for complex insurance domains.
• Implementing and standardizing Microsoft Purview for enterprise governance.
• Designing governed data architectures using Microsoft Fabric, OneLake, Lakehouse, and Warehouse.
• Establishing data quality, lineage, cataloging, classification, and compliance standards.
• Governing Power BI semantic models and enterprise KPI definitions.
• Implementing information protection, RLS, OLS, sensitivity labels, and DLP policies.
• Preparing enterprise data and semantic models for NLM, Q&A, and Copilot capabilities.
