The Outer Cover Designer will design, develop and industrialize functional textile covers and garment components for soft body armour, hard armour plate carriers and related protective products. The role combines garment design, pattern engineering, material selection, ergonomics, fit, stitching construction and production readiness. The designer will translate customer and tender requirements into manufacturable outer-cover solutions that are comfortable, durable, compliant and cost effective.
Key responsibilities
Design and product development :-
- Create concepts, technical sketches, detailed drawings and specifications for body-armour outer covers, tactical vests, plate carriers, pockets, pouches and associated textile components.
- Develop garment patterns, size grading and prototypes for male, female and special-fit requirements, with attention to body coverage, mobility, comfort, load distribution and donning and doffing.
- Convert customer specifications, tender clauses and product briefs into practical design features and complete design inputs.
- Prepare and maintain tech packs covering patterns, measurements, tolerances, seam and stitch details, reinforcement locations, trims, labels, closures, webbing and workmanship requirements.
- Use draping, 2D pattern making and 3D garment visualisation where applicable to improve fit and reduce development iterations.
Materials and construction
- Select and evaluate suitable shell fabrics, spacer meshes, foams, hook-and-loop systems, webbing, buckles, zippers, threads, labels and other garment accessories based on performance and end-use needs.
- Define stitch classes, seam types, reinforcement methods, edge binding and assembly sequences suitable for protective-equipment manufacture.
- Coordinate testing for fabric and accessory properties such as tensile and tear strength, abrasion, colour fastness, dimensional stability, water resistance, flame behaviour and durability when specified.
- Support cost reduction and value engineering without compromising fit, workmanship, functionality or customer requirements.
Prototype and production support
- Work closely with sample-room tailors, pattern masters, product engineers and production teams to develop prototypes and close fit and workmanship observations.
- Conduct fit trials and design reviews, document observations and issue controlled revisions of patterns, specifications and bills of materials.
- Support pilot production, time study, line setup and transfer of approved designs to mass production.
- Investigate production and customer complaints related to fit, stitching, workmanship or accessories and support corrective and preventive action.
Mandatory education
Degree or minimum three-year diploma in Fashion Design, Fashion Technology, Garment Technology, Apparel Design, Apparel Production, Textile Design or a closely related discipline from a recognised institute or university.
Relevant experience
Four to six years of experience in garment, functional apparel, tactical gear, bags, performance wear or protective-product design, including at least two to three years in a similar product-development role.
Portfolio requirement
Candidates must provide a portfolio demonstrating garment design, technical sketches, pattern development, tech packs, prototypes and production-ready products. Experience in functional or tactical products is preferred.
Required knowledge and skills
- Strong knowledge of garment construction, industrial stitching, pattern making, grading, draping, fit analysis and measurement specifications.
- Ability to create production-ready technical sketches, specification sheets, tech packs and bills of materials.
- Working knowledge of woven, knitted, laminated and coated fabrics and of trims and accessories used in functional garments.
- Proficiency in relevant design and pattern tools such as Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, CLO 3D, Browzwear, Gerber AccuMark, Lectra, Optitex or equivalent software.
- Understanding of ergonomics, anthropometry, comfort, mobility and size and fit considerations for protective garments.
- Good problem-solving, documentation, project coordination and cross-functional communication skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
