Role Overview
The Junior Localization Engineer provides the essential technical foundation for the translation production cycle. In this role, you focus on the daily preparation and finalization of content, ensuring that files move smoothly through the localization pipeline. You are responsible for supporting the engineering team in file processing, troubleshooting basic technical issues, and ensuring that linguists have the right environment to work efficiently.
---
Core Responsibilities & Problem-Solving Focus
1. CAT Tool Support & File Preparation
- File Handoffs: Prepare and package files for translation using industry-standard CAT tools (e.g., Trados, Phrase, memoQ).
- Quality Assurance (QA): Perform automated Quality Assurance checks to identify missing translations, tag errors, and formatting inconsistencies.
- Basic Parsing: Assist in the configuration of file filters for common formats (HTML, XML, Office) to ensure content is correctly extracted
2. Technical Troubleshooting & Support
- UI/UX Testing: Assist in localized version testing to identify layout issues such as text clipping, font rendering errors, or alignment problems.
- File Recovery: Perform basic troubleshooting on "corrupt" or failing bilingual files to ensure they can be imported or exported correctly.
- Pseudo-localization: Run pseudo-localization tests under the guidance of senior engineers to check for basic text expansion or character encoding issues.
3. Maintenance & Asset Management
- TM & Terminology Updates: Help maintain Translation Memories (TMs) and Termbases by performing basic imports, exports, and alignment of previously translated documents.
- Delivery Preparation: Re-integrate translated content back into its original format, ensuring the final output matches the source structure.
4. Process Assistance
- Status Tracking: Monitor automated workflows and report any breaks in the CI/CD pipeline to the senior engineering team.
- Documentation: Maintain internal technical guides and project-specific instructions for linguists.
---
Technical Qualifications
- Experience: 13 years of experience in the localization industry or a technical degree in Computer Science, Linguistics, or a related field.
- Software Familiarity: Basic knowledge of CAT tools (Trados, Phrase, or similar) and an understanding of how translation software functions.
- Technical Literacy:
- Foundational knowledge of HTML/XML structures.
- Basic understanding of Regular Expressions (RegEx) is a plus.
- Comfortable working with different File Formats (XLIFF, JSON, .properties).
- Attention to Detail: High level of precision when handling complex folder structures and naming conventions.
- Problem-Solving Mindset: A natural curiosity for "breaking" and "fixing" files, with a drive to learn automation and scripting.
