Job Description: Linux/Unix Administrator
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Linux System Administrator to manage, maintain, and support our enterprise Linux-based infrastructure. The primary focus of this role is high-availability Linux systems, automation, and OS lifecycle management, with secondary support for Unix/Solaris platforms.
The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Linux distributions (RHEL, Ubuntu), High Availability (HA) clustering, Ansible automation, and patching strategies, alongside exposure to modern AI-driven administrative tools. You will lead system reliability, performance optimization, and security initiatives while managing daily operations and guiding team members.
Key Responsibilities
Team & Operations Management:
* Lead and mentor the Linux/Unix operational team, assign daily tasks, and take full ownership of Business-As-Usual (BAU) activities.
* Prepare daily/monthly reporting updates related to the Linux/Unix tower.
* Coordinate seamlessly across technical towers (Network, Backup, Storage, Windows/VMware, Active Directory, Infoblox).
Linux System Administration & High Availability:
* Install, configure, optimize, and maintain Linux servers (primarily RHEL and Ubuntu) across physical, virtual, and cloud environments.
* Deploy, manage, and troubleshoot High Availability (HA) environments using Pacemaker clusters and Corosync.
* Maintain core infrastructure services (FTP, DNS, SMTP, Splunk, Microsoft Defender, Azure Arc, etc.).
* Integrate Linux servers with Active Directory using realm, sssd, and Kerberos.
Automation & Agentic AI Integration:
* Standardize and automate routine tasks, system provisioning, configuration management, and post-patching compliance using Ansible playbooks/roles and shell scripting (Bash, Python).
* Explore and integrate Agentic AI tools and workflow automation to streamline incident triage, log analysis, system monitoring, and repetitive administrative workflows.
Patching & Lifecycle Management:
* Plan, schedule, and execute regular Linux OS patching, updates, kernel upgrades, and security maintenance.
* Manage central package repositories (YUM/DNF, APT) and staging environments for enterprise-wide patch compliance.
Solaris Support (Secondary/Good to Have):
* Provide secondary support for legacy Solaris systems, including basic administration of Control Domains (cdom), Logical Domains (ldom), and Zones where required.
Security, Monitoring & Disaster Recovery:
* Implement robust security controls including firewalls, SSH hardening, and auditing.
* Monitor performance and capacity alerts 24/7; proactively resolve bottlenecks and manage Incidents, Changes, and Service Requests.
* Maintain disaster recovery (DR) strategies, system failovers, and backup validation.
Required Skills & Qualifications
* Experience: 7+ years of hands-on experience as a Linux System Administrator, with proven team leadership and task assignment skills.
* Primary OS Expertise: Advanced proficiency in enterprise Linux distributions, specifically RHEL and Ubuntu.
* Clustering & HA: Strong practical experience deploying, configuring, and maintaining Pacemaker clusters for high-availability environments.
Automation & AI:
* Advanced hands-on proficiency with Ansible automation (playbook development, roles, Ansible Tower/AWX).
* Experience or strong interest in leveraging Agentic AI models/assistants for IT operations, automated troubleshooting, and runbook execution.
Patching & Scripting:
* Demonstrated expertise in enterprise patch management practices (using Satellite, Landscape, or native package managers) and automated rollout strategies.
* Proficiency in shell scripting (Bash, Python).
Networking & Identity Integration:
* Strong understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and routing concepts.
* Hands-on experience integrating Linux with Active Directory (sssd, realm).
Cloud & Virtualization:
* Knowledge of virtualization (VMware vSphere) and public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure).
* Exposure to container technology (Docker, Kubernetes) is a plus.
Soft Skills:
* Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities under production pressure.
* Excellent communication skills for client reporting, team guidance, and cross-functional collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications (Good to Have)
* Solaris Expertise: Experience with Solaris OS, including creation and management of cdom, ldom, and zones.
* Certifications: Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), or Ubuntu/Canonical equivalents.
* Container Platforms: Knowledge of Red Hat OpenShift Platform.
* Tooling: Familiarity with enterprise monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds, Datadog) and ITSM/Ticketing tools (e.g., Jira, ServiceNow).
Working Conditions
* Morning / Afternoon / Night shifts on a rotation basis.
* Evening or weekend work as required for maintenance windows, patching, and upgrades.
* On-call rotation duties as per operational demands.
