Lead Mainframe Application Support Engineer (COBOL, JCL, SQL)

General Position Information

Job Summary

Position Summary: Provides senior-level application engineering, operational support, and technical problem resolution for Revenue Applications and Electronic Processing (EP) processes. The role supports high-volume healthcare revenue-cycle and EDI/remittance workflows and works independently with business, operations, database, infrastructure, and development partners.

Responsibilities

• Provide advanced operational and production support for revenue-cycle applications and related integrations.
• Triage, research, and resolve complex application, transaction, data, and processing issues across multiple systems and environments.
• Use SQL, application logs, transaction history, and diagnostic tools to identify root causes and support issue resolution.
• Investigate and resolve production-processing exceptions, including mainframe job abends, late-running JCL, allocation issues, and sequencing or restart requirements.
• Coordinate with Operations, infrastructure teams, business partners, vendors, and other application teams to resolve incidents and restore processing.
• Support application interfaces, data exchanges, scheduled jobs, and batch-processing activities.
• Design, build, and support data structures, utilities, reports, and other technical solutions that improve operational reliability and business processing.
• Support production changes through established change-management, testing, documentation, and deployment processes.
• Create and maintain operational documentation and identify opportunities for automation and process improvement.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring and participate in after-hours or on-call support as required.

Education Experience

• College undergraduate degree preferred; equivalent work experience considered.
• More than 7 years of relevant work experience.

Must Have Skills

• Experience with mainframe technologies, COBOL, JCL, file-processing routines, or production job scheduling.
• Strong technical troubleshooting and logical problem-solving skills.
• Working knowledge of healthcare revenue-cycle processes, electronic remittance workflows, and EDI transaction processing.
• Proficiency in SQL and strong general database concepts.
• Experience with production operations, incident/ticket management, job recovery, and change-control processes.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to Have Skills

• Experience with GitHub, DevOps practices, and CI/CD concepts.
• Background supporting Healthcare IT revenue-cycle applications and electronic posting/remittance processes.
• Experience mentoring team members or providing technical/functional guidance on complex support activities.
• Experience working in healthcare information technology
