Lead Engineer - Backend (Java)

Role & responsibilities

We are hiring a Lead Engineer with 5 to 7 years of experience to build and own backend services in Java and Spring Boot while guiding the junior engineers. This is a hands-on role: you will write production code every week, and you will also set technical direction, review the team's work and lead delivery of features from design to release.

Key Responsibilities

Hands-on development

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable, secure microservices using Java and Spring Boot.
• Build search and indexing features on Elasticsearch, and model and tune data in MongoDB.
• Write clean, well-tested, maintainable code and own features end to end, from requirement to production.
• Troubleshoot production issues, find root causes, and improve performance, reliability, and observability.

Mentoring and team building

Guide and coach junior engineers through pairing and reviews.

Help the team grow its skills and take ownership of what it builds.

Required Skills and Experience

• 5-7 years of backend development experience, with strong hands-on coding.
• Strong command of Java (Java 8 or higher), including collections, concurrency, streams, and exception handling.
• Solid experience with Spring Boot and the wider Spring ecosystem (Spring MVC, Data, Security).
• Proven experience designing and building microservices: REST APIs, service communication, resilience and fault tolerance.
• Working experience with Elasticsearch: index design, queries, mappings and performance tuning.
• Working experience with MongoDB: schema design, indexing, aggregation pipelines and query optimization.
• Good understanding of object-oriented design, design patterns and clean-code principles.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, and ownership; able to explain technical choices clearly to team members and stakeholders.

Good to Have

• Experience with Kafka or another messaging or event-streaming platform.
• Experience with MySQL or other relational databases, including SQL tuning.
• Knowledge of Angular, to work with front-end teams and review integrations.
• Background in a product-based company (strongly preferred).
• Team management experience, such as leading, mentoring, or coordinating a small team (a big plus).
• Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, cloud platforms (AWS, GCP or Azure), and monitoring tools.

Education: B.Tech / B.E. (Computer Science or a related field) or MCA.
