Job Title: Kernel Engineer (Part Time / Freelance)

Location: 100% Work From Home — anywhere in India

Employment Type: Part Time / Freelance / Contract

Working Hours: Flexible — work at your own pace and schedule

Weekly Off: You choose your own days off

    Experience: 2–6 years

Salary: 15,000 – 40,000/month based on hours and experience

    Joining: Immediate

    Special Note

This role is open to everyone — including homemakers, mothers, and women returning to work after a career break. If you have the technical skills, we welcome you. You set your own schedule. You work from home. You contribute to something India will be proud of.

    About the Role

We are building IndianBrand Mobile OS — India's first 100% from-scratch operating system. We need a Kernel Engineer who can write bare-metal C code and understand how operating systems work at the lowest level. This is rare, exciting, and genuinely historic work.

    Required Skills

    • C Programming (expert level) — you must be comfortable writing C without any standard library
    • x86 or ARM Assembly — basic understanding of Assembly language
    • Operating system fundamentals — memory management, process scheduling, interrupts
    • Linux development environment — comfortable on Ubuntu or similar
    • GDB — debugging compiled code
    • Git — version control

    Key Responsibilities

    • Write and improve kernel code in C — memory manager, interrupt handlers, process scheduler
    • Write Assembly code for low-level hardware initialisation
    • Test kernel changes in QEMU virtual machine
    • Document code clearly for the team
    • Collaborate asynchronously with other developers via Git and email
    • Research and implement OS concepts from OSDev Wiki and reference documents

Phase 1 is already complete — bootloader, kernel, VGA driver, keyboard driver, and basic shell all working in QEMU. You will work on Phase 2 (memory manager, interrupts) and beyond.

    Nice to Have

    • Rust — for memory-safe kernel components
    • ARM64 experience — for Phase 4 phone hardware port
    • Prior OSDev or embedded systems experience
    • Familiarity with QEMU, Bochs, or other emulators
    • Understanding of device drivers
    • Computer Science degree or equivalent self-taught background

    What We Offer

15,000 – 40,000/month based on hours and experience

Claude AI Pro subscription — worth 1,700/month

100% Work From Home — no commute ever

Fully flexible hours — work during school hours, after bedtime, whenever suits you

No fixed office hours — async communication only

    Part time — 2 to 4 hours/day is enough

Be part of India's most ambitious OS project

Your name in the IndianBrand OS credits — historic contribution

    Direct collaboration with the founder

    How to Apply

    Send your resume to:

    [email removed]

Subject: Kernel Engineer — [Your Name]

    Please include:

    • Any OS development projects, GitHub links, or OSDev work
    • Your answer to this one question: What is the purpose of the GDT in x86 protected mode?
    • Your preferred working hours per day
    • Any career break details — we understand and respect career breaks

Note: We evaluate purely on technical skill. Career gaps, location, and schedule flexibility are never a barrier here.
