About this role
Job Summary
The Junior Mechanical Engineer designs mechanical parts and subassemblies with the guidance of the senior engineers. The position holder learns to take hardware from requirement to delivery, and receives more ownership with experience. Aerostructures, aerodynamics and flight dynamics are not in the primary scope of this role. Dedicated CAE engineers do the detailed simulation work.
Responsibilities
- CAD. Create parametric CAD models of machined, sheet-metal, welded and moulded parts, and of subassemblies. Keep the models stable when dimensions or interfaces change.
- Drawings and BOMs. Create production drawings and BOM entries with correct views, dimensions, GD&T, materials, finishes and notes. Submit them for check and release through PDM/PLM.
- Calculations. Do hand calculations for loads, stresses, deflection, fastener loads and thermal expansion. Give each calculation to a senior engineer for check.
- Assembly checks. Do interference, clearance, tool-access and fastener-access checks on assemblies. Estimate mass and centre of gravity.
- Vendors. Send drawings to vendors, answer their technical questions and track each part to delivery. Support incoming inspection and First Article Inspection.
- Builds and tests. Support prototype builds, assembly, environmental tests, ground tests and flight trials. Record the test results and the as-built configuration.
- Change control. Implement approved ECOs in CAD models and drawings, and keep the CAD, drawing and BOM revisions consistent.
- Reviews. Present your work at peer reviews, and apply the review feedback to your designs.

Requirements
Minimum Experience (Years): 1-2 year of mechanical design or manufacture. Fresh graduates with strong hands-on hardware projects can also apply. HyPrix prefers this experience, but it is not mandatory. Demonstrated capability is more important than years.
Required Skills
- Hardware. At least one part or assembly that you designed, had manufactured and tested. Examples are a student competition vehicle, a drone, a test rig or a product in a previous job.
- CAD. Hands-on capability in a major CAD system, for example SolidWorks, Siemens NX, Creo or CATIA. Ability to make high-quality engineering drawings to common industry standards.
- Hands-on skills. Demonstrated fabrication, workshop or laboratory skills.
- Drawings. Knowledge of engineering drawing practice, basic GD&T, fits and tolerances.
- Fundamentals. Statics, strength of materials, free-body diagrams, stress, deflection, basic fatigue and thermal expansion.
- Manufacture. Knowledge of CNC machining, sheet metal, welding, moulding and additive manufacturing, and of their effect on design.
- Discipline. Attention to part numbers, materials, tolerances and documentation, also when the work moves fast. You check your own work before you submit it.
- A bachelors degree in mechanical, aerospace or production engineering.
Advantageous Skills/Qualifications
- Basic linear static or modal FEA, and tolerance-stack analysis.
- Experience with SolidWorks or Siemens NX.
- Experience with vibration, shock or environmental tests.
- Experience with production drawings at a defence, aerospace or automotive manufacturer or supplier.
- Experience with a PDM or PLM system.
- Experience with inspection instruments, CMM reports and First Article Inspection reports.
