Job Summary

We are looking for a Java Developer with 2–5 years of hands-on development experience to join the Promotions Product Development team. The candidate will be responsible for developing, enhancing, debugging, testing, and maintaining a promotions engine within an established retail technology product.

The ideal candidate should have strong Core Java, SQL, Hibernate/JPA, REST APIs, XML/JSON, JavaScript and JSP experience, along with strong debugging and production-support capabilities. Experience working with Jenkins, SVN, unit/integration testing and relational databases is required.

Candidates from software product companies are preferred, particularly those with exposure to retail, POS, promotions, pricing, loyalty, billing or other transaction-oriented systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain promotion-related features across:
• REST APIs
• Business rules
• Promotion logic
• Reports
• Backend services
• Develop enhancements using Java while working within an existing product codebase.
• Analyze and resolve application defects using:
• Application logs
• Stack traces
• Exceptions
• Database queries
• Debugging tools
• Investigate and resolve live/production application issues.
• Safely modify, refactor and enhance legacy/established code.
• Identify opportunities for technical-debt reduction.
• Improve application performance, reliability and maintainability.
• Write and maintain unit tests and integration tests.
• Build, package and deploy applications using Jenkins.
• Manage source code and version control using SVN.
• Diagnose integration issues between the promotions platform, POS systems and other connected applications.
• Participate in root-cause analysis (RCA) for recurring defects and production issues.
• Implement defect-prevention and corrective actions.
• Work closely with product, QA and technical teams to deliver reliable product enhancements.

Technical Skills — Mandatory

1. Core Java — Must Have

• 2–5 years of hands-on Java development.
• Strong understanding of Java fundamentals.
• Object-Oriented Programming — OOP.
• Collections.
• Exception handling.
• Multithreading/concurrency fundamentals.
• Java I/O and common Java APIs.
• Debugging and code-level troubleshooting.
• Ability to understand and modify an existing Java codebase.

2. SQL & Relational Databases — Must Have

• Strong SQL knowledge.
• Relational database concepts.
• Joins.
• Subqueries.
• Aggregations.
• Query optimization/basic performance analysis.
• Database troubleshooting.
• Ability to analyze production issues through database queries.

3. Hibernate / JPA — Must Have

• Hands-on experience with Hibernate and/or JPA.
• ORM concepts.
• Entity mapping.
• Relationships.
• CRUD operations.
• Querying and transaction handling.

4. REST APIs — Must Have

• REST API development/maintenance.
• API integration.
• HTTP methods and status codes.
• Request/response handling.
• JSON processing.
• API debugging and troubleshooting.

5. XML / JSON — Must Have

• XML processing.
• JSON processing.
• Data serialization/deserialization.
• Troubleshooting API/integration payloads.

6. JavaScript & JSP — Must Have

• JavaScript fundamentals.
• JSP development/maintenance.
• Ability to work on existing web application components.
• Understanding of backend-to-frontend integration.

7. Testing — Must Have

• Unit testing.
• Integration testing.
• Test-case development.
• Defect reproduction.
• Regression testing.
• Ability to write tests for newly developed or modified functionality.

8. Debugging & Production Support — Must Have

This is a particularly important part of the role.

Candidates should be capable of:

• Reading application logs.
• Understanding stack traces/exceptions.
• Reproducing defects.
• Debugging Java code.
• Identifying database-related issues.
• Troubleshooting API/integration failures.
• Performing root-cause analysis.
• Supporting live/production applications.

9. Jenkins — Must Have

• Build and deployment using Jenkins.
• Understanding of CI/CD pipelines.
• Application build/package/deployment troubleshooting.

10. SVN — Must Have

• Practical experience with Subversion (SVN).
• Source-code check-in/check-out.
• Branching/merging.
• Version management.

Preferred / Good-to-Have Skills

Rule Engine / Promotions

• Drools
• Rule-engine development
• Business-rule implementation
• Decision tables
• Promotion/rule evaluation logic

Drools is preferred but not mandatory if the candidate has strong Java fundamentals and is willing to learn rule-engine technology.

Frontend

• React
• Modern JavaScript
• Basic frontend development experience

Domain Experience

Candidates with experience in any of the following domains are preferred:

• Retail technology
• POS
• Point of Sale
• Promotions
• Pricing
• Loyalty
• Billing
• Retail ERP
• Order management
• Store management
• Transaction processing
• Distribution management
• E-commerce/retail platforms

Product Company Preference

Software product-company experience is preferred over pure IT-services experience.

Strong candidates may have experience in:

• Product development
• Product maintenance
• Enterprise applications
• Retail products
• SaaS products
• POS products
• Transaction-processing platforms
• Long-running/established product codebases

Candidates from service companies can still be considered if they have strong hands-on Java development + production debugging + product/application ownership experience.

AI Coding Tools — Preferred

Candidates who have practical exposure to AI-assisted software development tools can be considered positively, particularly for:

• Understanding unfamiliar/legacy code
• Debugging assistance
• Generating unit tests
• Code refactoring suggestions
• Documentation/code explanation
• Identifying potential defects
