About this role
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Head of West Coast Philanthropy based in United States.
This is a high-ownership opportunity to build and lead a new philanthropy channel focused on high-net-worth individuals, family offices, and technology-sector communities across the US West Coast. You will develop the strategy, systems, relationships, and revenue pipeline needed to establish a scalable source of philanthropic support. The role combines relationship management, business development, community building, strategic communications, and portfolio ownership. You will engage founders, investors, technology leaders, and next-generation philanthropists around a mission focused on expanding economic opportunity for young people in Africa. Success will require the ability to build trust within influential networks, translate evidence and impact into compelling partnership opportunities, and turn relationships into long-term support. You will operate with substantial independence while collaborating closely with a global team working across significant time-zone differences. Over time, the role offers the opportunity to expand revenue responsibility, leadership scope, and influence as the West Coast channel grows.
Accountabilities: Own the West Coast philanthropy channel end-to-end, including segment strategy, relationship development, pipeline management, revenue targets, and long-term growth.
Serve as the primary relationship manager for a portfolio of high-net-worth individuals, family offices, technology-sector philanthropists, founders, investors, and other influential supporters.
Build authentic, long-term relationships with prospective and existing partners, understanding their priorities and identifying opportunities to align them with the organization's mission and impact.
Identify and develop new prospects across founder, investor, effective altruism, entrepreneurial, technology, and philanthropic ecosystems.
Map relevant West Coast communities, including technology companies, AI organizations, startup networks, venture firms, family offices, and philanthropic groups, and develop strategies for meaningful engagement.
Build and maintain a strong prospect pipeline with clear progression and conversion strategies, creating a repeatable sourcing process that can scale over time.
Collaborate with executive leaders and board members to leverage existing networks, generate warm introductions, and develop new relationship opportunities.
Design and host intimate gatherings, dinners, learning sessions, and other community experiences that connect influential individuals with the organization's mission, evidence, and impact.
Strengthen visibility and credibility within West Coast technology, founder, and philanthropic communities through thoughtful external engagement and community building.
Develop compelling pitches, one-pagers, presentations, and communications tailored to high-net-worth and technology-sector audiences.
Translate complex evidence, impact data, and organizational ambitions into clear and persuasive partnership opportunities that inspire action.
Maintain accurate pipeline tracking and provide regular reporting on relationship development, revenue performance, and network activity.
Coordinate proposals, reporting, stewardship, and other fundraising activities with the broader development team.
Establish one- to two-year channel strategies and goals in partnership with leadership, taking meaningful ownership of strategy rather than simply executing an existing plan.
Keep senior leadership informed of important developments and proactively bring recommendations and solutions when escalation is required.
Requirements
Typically 8–10+ years of relevant professional experience, with demonstrated ownership of a portfolio, business line, major relationship book, or comparable area of responsibility.
Proven ability to build and sustain trusted relationships with influential founders, investors, executives, operators, philanthropists, or other high-level stakeholders.
Strong commercial and pipeline-oriented mindset, with experience in fundraising, strategic partnerships, business development, enterprise sales, venture, investor relations, or a comparable environment.
Demonstrated ability to independently develop relationships and convert networks into meaningful partnerships, revenue, or strategic opportunities.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to adapt messaging to different audiences and inspire action through compelling storytelling.
Strong analytical and intellectual capabilities, including the ability to understand impact data, engage with evidence, and communicate complex ideas convincingly to analytically minded audiences.
Entrepreneurial mindset and comfort building new systems, processes, and networks where established structures do not yet exist.
Highly self-directed and proactive, with the ability to manage priorities, relationships, and workstreams independently.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage a significant pipeline while maintaining consistent follow-up and relationship stewardship.
Comfort operating across substantial time-zone differences and collaborating effectively with a globally distributed team.
Strong existing networks within West Coast technology, founder, investment, or philanthropic communities are a significant advantage.
Relevant backgrounds may include venture capital, startup ecosystems, strategic partnerships, business development, enterprise sales, investor relations, capital raising, community building, executive networking, major gifts fundraising, philanthropy advisory, or founder/early-stage operating roles.
Genuine alignment with a mission-driven environment focused on youth opportunity, economic empowerment, learning, and measurable social impact.
Ability to complete required background verification and safeguarding screening in accordance with applicable legal standards.
Benefits
Market-based compensation, with salary expectations discussed early in the hiring process.
Full-time position with a requested minimum two-year commitment.
Opportunity to build a new philanthropy channel from the ground up with significant strategic ownership.
US West Coast-based role, with the San Francisco Bay Area strongly preferred.
High degree of independence and autonomy in managing relationships, pipeline, strategy, and day-to-day priorities.
Remote work environment with strong support from a global team based primarily in East Africa.
Opportunity to work directly with influential technology, founder, investment, and philanthropic communities.
