Role Description

The Head of Engineering is a full-time, responsible for owning the technology architecture and engineering function of PlayPausePost's platform. This role leads the end-to-end development of a system spanning camera and edge infrastructure, cloud video processing, AI and computer vision, match scoring, player analytics, rankings, and the end-user mobile app. The Head of Engineering guides architectural decisions, oversees multiple engineering teams, and ensures the delivery of robust, scalable, and secure solutions aligned with business objectives.

Day-to-day responsibilities include defining the technology strategy and engineering roadmap, making build-vs-buy and technology selection decisions, and designing resilient distributed systems for high-volume data and real-time workloads. The role partners with ML and computer vision teams to take models from experimentation to production, architects video ingestion and delivery pipelines, and defines API and mobile backend architecture. It also establishes CI/CD, observability, and incident management practices, sets application, infrastructure, and data-security standards, coaches and mentors team members, and collaborates with Product, Hardware, Operations, and Business teams. The Head of Engineering is expected to enforce best practices in coding, testing, and deployment, monitor performance metrics, and foster a culture of ownership, quality, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• Strong skills in Software Development, with experience designing, building, and scaling complex, production-grade systems end to end.
• Proven Team Management and Team Leadership capabilities, including mentoring, performance management, and building high-performing engineering teams.
• Demonstrated Project Management experience, overseeing multiple initiatives, managing timelines, and delivering results within scope and budget.
• Expertise in System and Enterprise Architecture, including distributed systems, integration, scalability, reliability, and security considerations.
• Hands-on experience with several of: video streaming and processing, AI/ML or computer vision pipelines, real-time data systems, mobile app backends, and IoT/edge infrastructure.
• Strong expertise in cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and API design, with experience in DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and incident management.
• Solid understanding of security, privacy, and data protection practices, including authentication, authorization, and encryption.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to align technical decisions with business goals.
• 12+ years of software engineering experience, including 8+ years in senior technical leadership (Head of Engineering, VP Engineering, CTO, or Principal Architect).
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

• Experience in sports tech, media, or camera/hardware-driven products.
• Experience taking ML models into production (MLOps).
• Experience in an early-stage or high-growth startup environment.
• Hands-on experience with edge computing and low-latency video delivery.
