Head -Civil Design - GIS Substation EPC

Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced Head Civil Design to lead the Civil & Structural Engineering function for GIS Substation EPC projects.

The incumbent will be responsible for complete civil and structural engineering activities from tender engineering, basic engineering and detailed design through IFC/AFC drawings, construction support and project close-out.

The role requires strong experience in HV/EHV GIS substations, preferably 220 kV, 400 kV and 765 kV, along with proven expertise in civil-electrical interfaces, client/consultant coordination, engineering team management and EPC project execution.

Key Responsibilities

Civil & Structural Design Leadership

• Lead the Civil & Structural Design team for GIS substations and associated transmission projects.
• Establish design basis, engineering philosophy, design criteria and applicable codes/standards.
• Review and approve civil/structural calculations, drawings, specifications, BOQs and engineering deliverables.
• Ensure timely release of IFC/AFC drawings in line with project schedules.
• Plan engineering manpower, resources, priorities and deliverables.
• Ensure design quality, constructability and compliance with project requirements.

GIS Substation Civil Design

Lead/review civil and structural design for:

• GIS buildings / GIS halls
• Control room / relay buildings
• Transformer and reactor foundations
• GIS equipment foundations
• Equipment support structures
• Cable trenches and cable vaults
• Oil collection and oil drainage systems
• Fire-water and utility systems
• Roads and pavements
• Storm-water drainage
• Site grading and development
• Boundary walls and fencing
• Gantry and equipment foundations

Ensure consideration of equipment loads, seismic loads, wind loads, vibration, equipment clearances, transportation requirements, maintenance access and crane requirements.

EPC & Interdisciplinary Coordination

• Coordinate civil design with GIS, electrical, protection & control, mechanical, HVAC, fire protection, earthing and MEP teams.
• Manage civil-electrical interface requirements related to:

• GIS equipment layouts
• Cable entry and routing
• Embedded plates
• Anchor bolts
• Equipment foundations
• Building openings
• Floor loading
• Equipment access
• Crane and maintenance requirements
• Identify and resolve interdisciplinary design issues before IFC release.

Client & Consultant Coordination

• Act as the primary Civil Engineering interface with clients, consultants, utilities and statutory authorities.
• Lead technical discussions, design review meetings and engineering coordination meetings.
• Review and respond to client/consultant comments.
• Obtain approvals for civil design documents and drawings.
• Manage technical deviations, design clarifications and engineering changes.

Construction & Site Support

• Provide technical support to construction teams during project execution.
• Resolve site technical queries, RFIs and design-related issues.
• Review proposed site modifications and design changes.
• Participate in site visits, constructability reviews and technical inspections.
• Ensure designs are practical, economical and construction-friendly.
• Minimize design-related rework and construction delays.

Tender & Proposal Engineering

• Support tendering and proposal activities for GIS substation EPC projects.
• Review tender documents, technical specifications, site information and geotechnical reports.
• Develop preliminary civil layouts and quantities.
• Prepare/review civil BOQs, estimates, assumptions, exclusions and engineering deliverable lists.
• Identify technical risks, deviations and opportunities for value engineering.

Design Quality & Compliance

• Ensure compliance with applicable IS/IEC standards, NBC, IEEE requirements, client/utility specifications, ACI/Eurocodes, wherever applicable.
• Establish design checking and approval procedures.
• Conduct design reviews, constructability reviews and value-engineering studies.
• Ensure consistency, accuracy and quality of engineering deliverables.

Team Management

• Lead and mentor Civil, Structural and CAD/BIM engineering teams.
• Allocate engineering work and monitor productivity.
• Conduct technical reviews and knowledge-sharing sessions.
• Develop engineering standards, templates, calculation methodologies and design practices.
• Coordinate with external engineering/design consultants wherever required.
