About this role
Senior Software Engineer
Java + React • Product Engineering
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our product engineering team. You will work on the products that help our customers run and use their real estate:
- Projects, maintenance, and sustainability: capital projects and bidding, preventive and reactive maintenance, and energy & sustainability.
- Space and workplace: space management, occupancy, reservations, and visitor management.
These products sit on a mature Java and Oracle platform that customers rely on every day. We are now moving that platform onto a modern React front end and clean APIs, one workflow at a time. The first targets are high-traffic screens, such as the service request form that every employee at every customer uses, and the APIs that connect space, occupancy, reservations, and lease data.
You own whole initiatives in that work, from design through rollout. On a given week you might design the API behind a new React screen, trace a production issue through legacy Java and PL/SQL, and walk a newer engineer through a code review. You are the person the team trusts to make a big piece of work land, and to leave the codebase better than you found it.
This is not a greenfield role. Most of the system is legacy Java EE with a JSF/ADF front end, and you will spend real time in it. If you enjoy modernizing a system that already earns revenue, this is the work.
Key Responsibilities
Own initiatives end to end
- Take an initiative from an open problem to production: write the design, divide the work so several engineers can contribute, ship it, and support it after release.
- Partner with Product and Design on scope and timing. Say when a feature costs too much, and propose a cheaper path that still meets the outcome.
- Think through risks before the build starts. Escalate early when you find a surprise or the scope changes.
Modernize legacy workflows onto React
- Replace legacy Oracle ADF/JSF screens with React and TypeScript screens built on Holocron, Tango's shared design system.
- Design and build the Java APIs (Spring Boot) those screens need, so the same APIs can also serve integrations and AI agents later.
- Make pragmatic calls on where to rewrite and where to wrap. Accept a less-than-perfect solution when there is a good reason.
Keep the production estate healthy
- Drive improvements to code health, test coverage, and long-term maintainability in the team's codebases.
- Take part in on-call and incident response. Lead or contribute to postmortems, and turn the learnings into better patterns.
- Fix security findings in the code you own. Ship through the paved-road CI/CD pipeline.
Raise the team's craft
- Mentor and ramp up newer engineers through pairing, design reviews, and code reviews.
- Weigh in on technical decisions that affect the team. Take a position, and stay open to better ideas.
- Help the team improve how it works through retros.
Use AI as a force multiplier
- Build prompts, AI workflows, or lightweight agents that speed up the team's work, and teach others to use them well.
- Check AI-generated code with the same rigor as human code. Guard against over-reliance on it.
About You
- You have owned the design, build, and rollout of a large feature or initiative in a production B2B application, including the coordination, documentation, and support that came with it. (Typically 6+ years of professional software engineering.)
- You are fluent in Java on the server side, including Java EE and/or Spring Boot, and comfortable with relational databases. Oracle SQL and PL/SQL experience is a clear plus.
- You have shipped production React (ideally with TypeScript) and can build a screen against an API you designed.
- You have modernized or refactored a legacy system without stopping delivery, and you can explain the tradeoffs you made.
- You have mentored other engineers and made them measurably better.
- You use AI coding and research tools every day, you know their failure modes, and you can integrate an LLM API into a product when the problem fits.
Nice to Have
- Experience with Oracle ADF or JSF.
- Experience with a shared component library or design system.
- AWS experience, especially infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD pipelines.
- Domain experience in real estate, facilities, maintenance, or workplace software (IWMS, CAFM, CMMS).
What good looks like at 6 months
- Owns at least one modernization initiative in their team (for example, a React screen and its API) and has shipped it to production.
- Is the go-to reviewer for one area of the team's codebase, and newer engineers seek them out for help.
- Has carried one production incident or security finding from detection to fix to a written learning.
