Engineering Manager II Streaming Platform

As an Engineering Manager II - Streaming Platform, you will lead and grow a team of high-performing engineers focused on Apache Flink and Apache Kafka infrastructure. In this high-impact leadership position, you will drive the vision and execution for modernising our current streaming stack and architecting Uber's next-generation streaming platform. You will partner closely with cross-functional leadership, balance long-term platform evolution with daily operational excellence, and mentor top engineering talent in solving complex distributed systems challenges at massive scale.

Responsibilities:

• Strategic Leadership: Define the technical roadmap and long-term vision for Uber's Flink and Kafka ecosystem, modernising legacy stack components while ensuring seamless scalability and reliability.
• Team Management and Growth: Lead, mentor, and foster the professional development of a talented team of platform engineers, promoting an inclusive and high-performing culture.
• Technical and Operational Excellence: Oversee complex distributed systems architecture, driving high availability, disaster recovery, fault tolerance, and cost efficiency across streaming systems.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with data platform teams, application developers, and security leads across Uber to understand platform requirements and deliver seamless developer experiences.
• Execution and Delivery: Establish clear engineering standards, operational metrics, and project milestones to ensure reliable and timely delivery of critical infrastructure initiatives.

Requirements:

• 10+ years of professional experience in hands-on software development, with a strong foundation in building and scaling distributed systems and large-scale platform infrastructure.
• 2+ years of direct engineering management experience leading backend or platform engineering teams.
• Proven Track Record: Experience driving system reliability, performance optimisation, and fault-tolerant architecture in high-throughput environments.
• Technical Depth: In-depth understanding of distributed data architectures, concurrency, state management, and messaging systems.
• Streaming Expertise: Deep experience operating or contributing to distributed messaging and stream-processing engines like Apache Kafka, Apache Flink, Apache Pulsar, or Spark Streaming.
• Cloud and Infrastructure: Familiarity with modern containerised environments (Kubernetes), cloud deployment paradigms, and infrastructure automation tools.
• People Leadership: Demonstrated ability to attract, hire, retain, and elevate senior and staff-level engineering talent.
• Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to articulate technical strategy to senior executives and partner teams.
