Design Engineer – Temporary Works

Scope of Works:

• Structural design of temporary works
• Geotechnical design of temporary works
• Ground Water Engineering design (Dewatering)

Scope of temporary works extend, but are not limited to::

Formwork:

• Foundations for tower cranes and material hoists
• Ground water control
• Berthing of boats/barges
• Ground bearing/settlement
• Construction equipment loading on structures
• Structure sways to assess finishing movement gaps etc.

Falsework :

• Vertical soil supports using sheetpiles, king post, etc.
• Soil nailing walls
• Movement/jacking of cranes
• Timber structures
• Construction joints and movement joint design
• Sand erosion control both above and below water

Temporary bridges:

• Slope stability of excavations and embankments
• Blockwork and PC walls
• Wave protection
• Fabric and glass structures
• Structure shortening under progressive extra loading
• Circular Euler load designs

• Bachelor’s degree in Structure, Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
• Practical understanding / hands-on experience of site construction activities
• Structural Finite Element Analysis software
• Structural Detailing from analysis to shop drawings
• Geotechnical understanding of shoring, piling, embankment, ground water control,
• Knowledge of sheetpiles, king post, soil slope, fender piles, ground anchors, soil nailing.
• Knowledge of different formwork and falsework proprietary system, as well as timber.
• Knowledge of material properties and correct application and use in temporary works.
• Practical understanding of valancing design and material economy verses safety and quality.
• Ability to produce working drawings by hand as well as AutoCAD.
• Proven skills with various MS Office applications, i.e. MSWord, Excel, PowerPoint.
• Working knowledge of International Design Codes, BS, ACI, ASTM, DM, ADM, etc.
• Knowledge of UAE construction practices and un-written rules and requirements.
• Professional Engineers with work expertise in Temporary works structural design and geotechnic design.
• Proven ability to work independently, arriving at solutions in line with Senior’s staff instructions and practical reasoning, applying basic design principles and complying with Code requirements.
• Speed of analytical design and developing details necessary to match large number of work items
• Design Engineer must communicate effectively using English language, both written and spoken.
• Design Engineer must prepare design reports, as well as attend meetings to defend their design in front of Senior staff as well as third parties (Consultants and/or Government Officials)
• Junior staff lacking practical experience can be considered at junior level, but must demonstrate a fundamental understanding of structural analysis, material properties, development of detail drawings and shop drawings, and on-site application of temporary works.
• Senior site Engineers who wish to become designers can be considered but at an initial junior level. They need to prove fundamental understanding of structural principles, material properties and production of design and shop drawings.
