About The Role The Database Engineer role at Tech Data is a vital position dedicated to managing, optimizing, and innovating the company’s database infrastructure. This role involves end-to-end ownership of database projects, operational improvements, and ensuring the reliability and performance of critical database environments. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams, including application developers, infrastructure specialists, and vendors, to align database services with business objectives. This position offers an exciting opportunity to lead initiatives that enhance database architecture, automate routine tasks, and implement best practices across multiple platforms, including Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and SAP HANA. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying improvements, managing complex environments, and communicating effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess over seven years of hands-on experience in database engineering and administration within enterprise environments. Strong expertise in Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle Database, including installation, configuration, performance tuning, and high-availability solutions, is essential. Experience with SAP HANA administration is also required. Candidates should have solid skills in managing database platforms on both Linux (RHEL/SUSE) and Windows Server operating systems. Demonstrated ability to work independently—planning initiatives, managing timelines, and delivering results with minimal supervision—is crucial. Excellent communication skills are necessary to report progress, risks, and technical recommendations to diverse stakeholders. Proficiency in English at a professional working level (minimum B2, with C1 preferred) is required for effective collaboration across global teams.
Responsibilities The primary responsibilities of this role include:
- Independently planning, scoping, and executing database infrastructure projects and operational enhancements from start to finish.
- Establishing and maintaining standards, runbooks, and best practices for database administration across all supported platforms.
- Proactively identifying opportunities for process improvements, tooling enhancements, and architectural upgrades to optimize database management.
- Administering, monitoring, and tuning production database environments on Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and SAP HANA to ensure high performance and availability.
- Performing capacity planning, implementing backup and recovery strategies, and configuring high-availability solutions to minimize downtime.
- Managing database platforms on both Linux and Windows Server environments, ensuring they operate efficiently and securely.
- Participating in incident response, root cause analysis, and resolving database-related issues promptly.
- Providing regular updates and detailed documentation to technical and non-technical stakeholders regarding ongoing initiatives, risks, and technical decisions.
- Collaborating with application, infrastructure, and vendor teams to align database services with evolving business needs.
- Continuously evaluating new database technologies, versions, and configurations to improve efficiency and reduce operational risks.
- Driving automation efforts for routine tasks such as provisioning, patching, monitoring, and maintenance using tools like Ansible, Terraform, or similar.
