Data Scientist

POSITION OVERVIEW The Tribe Artificial Intelligence – AI Tribe at BNP Paribas Fortis is looking for a Data Scientist who will strengthen our AI‑driven solutions for both customers and employees. Working within the ISPL ITG Fortis ADM department (based in Chennai), you will turn raw data into reliable features, build and optimise predictive and generative models, and help move those models into production with robust monitoring and automation.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Collect, label, curate, structure and perform feature‑engineering on diverse data sources to improve model performance.
• Apply a broad spectrum of analytical techniques (classical ML, generative AI, data‑centric approaches) to answer business questions and enrich our AI assets.
• Deploy AI applications to production using the full tool‑chain (CI/CD pipelines, Apache Airflow, MLflow, Docker/Kubernetes, etc.).
• Establish and maintain model‑monitoring frameworks, tracking historical inputs and targets to detect data or concept drift.
• Automate end‑to‑end modelling pipelines to increase efficiency and reproducibility.
• Collaborate with data engineers, ML engineers, product owners and business analysts in an agile environment.
• Share best practices for data management (SQL, Pandas, Hadoop/Spark, web‑scraping) and model development across the tribe.
• Mentor junior team members and contribute to the continuous improvement of our AI governance standards.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE (MUST‑HAVE)

• Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Engineering or a related quantitative field.
• Minimum 5 years of professional data‑science experience; experience in the financial sector is strongly preferred.
• Proven expertise in Python (including libraries such as Pandas, Scikit‑learn, PyTorch/TensorFlow) and advanced SQL.
• Hands‑on experience with big‑data technologies (Hadoop, Spark) and web‑scraping techniques.
• Demonstrated ability to build, evaluate and optimise both predictive and generative AI models.
• Practical knowledge of production‑level tooling: CI/CD pipelines, Apache Airflow, MLflow, Docker/Kubernetes (or comparable).
• Experience designing and implementing model‑monitoring and drift‑detection processes.
• Strong understanding of data‑centric AI development (data quality, labeling, curation, feature engineering).
• Excellent written and spoken English; ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
• Proven working knowledge of Agile methodologies and a proactive, collaborative mindset.
• Core behavioural traits: strong analytical ability, effective communication, teamwork, and a results‑oriented attitude.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE (NICE‑TO‑HAVE)

• ≥ 5 years of end‑to‑end data‑science experience, preferably within a large‑scale banking or fintech environment.
• Direct experience with generative AI models (e.g., large language models, diffusion models) and prompt‑engineering.
• Familiarity with data‑labeling platforms and semi‑supervised learning techniques.
• Experience implementing automated model‑training pipelines (e.g., Kubeflow, Dagster).
• Knowledge of MLOps best practices, including versioning of data and models, reproducible experiments, and governance.
• Exposure to cloud‑native services (AWS, Azure, GCP) for AI workloads.
• Prior involvement in cross‑functional AI projects that delivered measurable business impact.
