About GSMS
GSMS is the largest provider of generic pharmaceuticals to the US federal healthcare system, serving the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense, and other government healthcare organizations.
Data is central to how we competeand win. Our data and analytics capabilities are a defining competitive advantage. The intelligence we develop about the government pharmaceutical market helps GSMS identify opportunities, shape our product portfolio, make competitive pricing decisions, and grow market share. Across sales, manufacturing, distribution, and daily operations, colleagues depend on our insights to decide where to act and how to succeed.
Were embarking on a company-wide AI transformation. Our 24-month implementation roadmap will bring AI and advanced analytics into how teams make decisions and get work done across GSMS. Modernizing our platform on Microsoft Fabric provides a foundation for self-service analytics, data and operational agents, and workflow automation. Within engineering, were integrating AI and large language models into a governed process for building, reviewing, and validating solutions.
Youll join a dedicated GSMS team, work directly with business users, and take lasting ownership of solutions that shape how the company competes.
The opportunity
Youll own the detailed architecture and enterprise data models behind GSMSs data platform, ensuring they support the business as our analytics and AI capabilities grow.
Reporting to the Data Solutions Architect, youll translate business needs and solution direction into practical platform designs. You’ll work alongside the Lead Data Engineer as a peer, setting technical direction within the agreed architecture and proving patterns that the engineering team implements.
Your initial priority will be helping validate and evolve our established Microsoft Fabric architecture during the migration from SQL Server and Azure Data Factory. Our target architecture uses lake-based bronze and silver layers transformed through PySpark notebooks, with Fabric Warehouse serving the gold layer.
After migration, you’ll continue to guide the platform’s evolution: integrating new sources, extending enterprise models, supporting new business capabilities, and improving reliability, security, performance, and cost efficiency.
This is an ongoing, hands-on architecture role. You’ll build prototypes, write SQL and PySpark, review implementations, and troubleshoot difficult issues throughout the platform’s lifecycle.
What you’ll do
- Evolve the platform architecture as business requirements, data volumes, analytics needs, and AI use cases develop.
- Establish and maintain consistent enterprise data models, aligning business definitions, grain, relationships, shared dimensions, and historical data across domains.
- Design the integration of new business systems, external sources, and data from acquired companies.
- Define and improve reusable patterns for ingestion, transformation, incremental processing, orchestration, reconciliation, and recovery.
- Make and document architectural decisions within the agreed technical direction, escalating significant changes to the Data Solutions Architect with clear recommendations.
- Partner with the Lead Data Engineer to review significant designs, guide implementation, and resolve architectural issues.
- Build prototypes and reference implementations in SQL and PySpark to test design choices and establish practical engineering patterns.
- Incorporate security, access controls, data quality, metadata, lineage, and deployment requirements into platform designs.
- Address systemic performance and reliability problems, and guide improvements to Fabric capacity usage and operating cost.
- Partner with the BI analytics team to ensure warehouse models support semantic modeling, reporting, and self-service analytics. The BI analytics team retains ownership of Power BI semantic models and reports.
- Develop reliable, understandable, and appropriately controlled data foundations for AI agents and advanced analytics.
- Evaluate new platform capabilities and recommend improvements based on business value, operational needs, and implementation cost.
- Use AI and large language models within established engineering controls, taking responsibility for reviewing and validating outputs.
Your initial migration focus
- Help validate and refine the existing Fabric medallion architecture through prototypes, implementation reviews, and results from migrated workloads.
- Review legacy SQL Server and Azure Data Factory solutions to identify dependencies, preserve business logic, and guide migration design.
- Resolve architectural questions arising during delivery and provide reference implementations for complex migration patterns.
- Partner with engineering and quality teams on reconciliation, cutover readiness, and operational continuity.
- Ensure migrated solutions have the documentation, monitoring, recovery patterns, and maintainability needed for long-term operation.
What you’ll bring
- Typically 8+ years of experience in data engineering, data warehousing, or data platforms, including 3+ years owning architecture or significant technical design decisions.
- Direct, hands-on production Microsoft Fabric experience, including Lakehouse, PySpark notebooks, and Fabric Warehouse.
- Strong SQL skills, particularly T-SQL in Microsoft SQL Server, plus strong Python and PySpark skills.
- Experience designing and implementing medallion architectures, with clear reasoning about the responsibilities of each layer.
- Strong enterprise data modeling experience, including dimensional models, shared dimensions, grain, relationships, and slowly changing dimensions.
- Hands-on experience with SQL Server and Azure Data Factory.
- Experience delivering a data warehouse or platform migration, including reconciliation, cutover planning, and operational continuity.
- Practical experience designing for security, access, deployment environments, reliability, performance, and capacity.
- Experience with Git, CI/CD, code reviews, and automated testing practices.
- Understanding of how warehouse design affects downstream semantic models, reporting accuracy, refresh requirements, and query performance.
- Clear written and spoken English, with the ability to clarify business requirements, explain trade-offs, and guide engineers without relying on direct management authority.
Helpful additional experience
- SQL Server-to-Fabric migrations.
- Delta Lake tuning and maintenance.
- Microsoft Purview or other data catalog, lineage, and governance tools.
- Familiarity with Power BI semantic models and Direct Lake.
- Designing data platforms to support AI, agents, or advanced analytics.
- Pharmaceutical, healthcare, or distribution data.
Compensation and benefits
- Annual fixed gross salary of 35,00,000–45,00,000, based on relevant skills and experience.
- Additional incentive compensation based on individual and company performance.
- Comprehensive medical insurance with family coverage options.
- Life insurance.
- Paid leave and holidays.
- Remote-work support.
Working arrangement
- This is a dedicated, full-time position, with employment administered through an Employer of Record (EOR) in India.
- Your day-to-day work, team relationships, and priorities will be with GSMS.
- Working hours are 2:00–10:00 PM IST, fixed year-round, providing overlap with US colleagues. Production support takes place within these hours.
- You must be available during scheduled working hours and may not hold another full-time job concurrently. Any outside work must comply with the applicable employment agreement and conflict-of-interest policy.
