About this role
Role Overview
The Black & Veatch Data Center Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Solutions Team is highly skilled and experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer with deep expertise in data center CFD modeling and analysis, including airflow management, thermal performance evaluation, and liquid-cooling simulations. The ideal candidate will possess advanced CFD capabilities and a strong understanding of data center cooling systems and mission-critical facility design. Key responsibilities include the following:
- Lead and manage complex CFD projects within the Data Center CFD Solutions Team, ensuring high-quality technical execution and client-focused deliverables.
- Provide technical and oversight for domestic and offshore (OUS) CFD project teams, and maintain consistency in modeling methodologies and reporting standards.
- Perform advanced CFD analyses of data center environments, including airflow, thermal, and liquid-cooling simulations for both steady-state and failure operating conditions.
- Develop and execute flow network models of liquid-cooling distribution systems, including coolant distribution units (CDUs), pumps, piping networks, manifolds, and rack-level cooling technologies to assess hydraulic performance, flow balance, pressure drops, and system redundancy.
- Conduct detailed airflow management assessments to evaluate cooling performance, rack inlet temperatures, containment effectiveness, and compliance with project design criteria.
- Perform transient CFD simulations to evaluate data center response to power and cooling system failure events, supporting resiliency and operational risk assessments.
- Conduct exterior CFD analyses to evaluate wind effects, recirculation, and heat entrainment associated with air-cooled chillers, dry coolers, cooling towers, generators, and other mechanical infrastructure.
- Perform air contaminant dispersion modeling for generator exhaust and other emission sources to assess environmental impacts, air quality risks, and compliance with applicable project requirements.
- Develop CFD-driven design recommendations to optimize cooling performance, improve energy efficiency, increase capacity utilization, and enhance operational resiliency in mission-critical data centers.
- Support business development activities through proposal preparation, technical presentations, and preferably carry out client engagement related to data center thermal management and CFD solutions.
- Develop and maintain documentation for CFD simulations and procedures.
- Develop CFD project proposals and labor estimates.
- Participate in our HVAC and Plumbing design group by assisting with or leading HVAC and plumbing design for building projects and performing Specification preparation and editing, etc.
- Assist with project management services on CFD projects such as monitoring and keeping records of project budgets and hours.
The Team
The Data Center CFD solutions group is associated with the Mechanical Buildings Design Team, which provides HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection solutions for Black & Veatchs 3 market sectors- Governments & Environment, Energy & Process Industries, and Technology, Commercial & Industrial (TCI). In this role, you will primarily be supporting the TCI market sector focusing on primarily HyperScale and Colocation Data Center design with associated administrative and support spaces. Our overall team supports projects across the globe. From small community improvements to grand-scale Mega Projects, you will be Building a World of Difference through infrastructure growth and development while learning and focusing on your own individual development. The foundation of BV Operations provides the ability to move where your skills are needed and allows for a collaborative and innovative culture offering greater challenges and career development opportunities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated working level proficiency in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) applied to data center airflow, thermal management, liquid-cooling, and mission-critical facility analysis.
- Demonstrate working level proficiency with Cadence Reality Data Center (formerly 6SigmaRoom) for modeling and analysis of internal and external data center environments, including airflow management, heat transfer, cooling optimization, transient failure analysis, and liquid-cooling applications.
- Experience with additional CFD platforms such as Siemens Simcenter STAR-CCM+ or ANSYS Fluent, or equivalent CFD software for advanced thermal-fluid analysis.
- Experience developing and applying flow network models for liquid-cooling systems, including coolant distribution units (CDUs), piping networks, pumps, manifolds, and rack-level cooling technologies.
- Advanced degree (ME/MTech.) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field with a specialization in fluid dynamics, heat transfer, thermal sciences, or CFD; or equivalent industry experience supplemented by advanced CFD training and coursework.
- Strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and data center cooling technologies, including air-cooled and liquid-cooled infrastructures.
- Experience with data center infrastructure design, cooling architecture evaluation, and industry standards supporting hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise data centers.
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems and fluid dynamics.
- Experience with data center infrastructure and design standards.
- Knowledge of industry standards and best practices for data center design and operation.
- Strong technical report writing skills.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing. Minimum of 4 years related work experience. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
