Level 2 (L2) Application Support Engineer SAS FRMS
Role Overview
The L2 Application Support Engineer is the technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the FRMS ecosystem. This role tackles complex application failures across SAS Fraud Management (SFM) and SAS Fraud Decisioning (SFD). The engineer conducts root cause analysis (RCA), tunes JBOSS middleware performance, and ensures the On-Demand Engine (ODE) maintains sub-second latency for real-time transaction scoring.
Key Responsibilities
- Complex Incident Resolution: Troubleshoot high-priority incidents affecting ODE real-time scoring latency, API timeouts, or SAS SFD interface unavailability. Analyze SAS compute tier, metadata, and deep JBOSS logs (e.g., server.log, garbage collection logs) to pinpoint infrastructure or code-level failures.
- JBOSS & Middleware Administration: Manage and configure JBOSS Application Servers hosting the SAS mid-tier. Troubleshoot JVM memory issues, thread contentions, and data source connection pool limits that impact the SFM platform.
- Deployment & Rule Publishing Support: Support the business fraud strategy team in deploying new fraud detection rules and scoring models to the ODE. Manage seamless application configurations and code promotions across UAT and Production environments without impacting real-time scoring.
- Data Pipeline & ETL Support: Investigate and resolve data feed failures into the fraud datamart. Coordinate with data engineering teams to troubleshoot upstream integration issues from enterprise tools (e.g., Informatica) feeding the SAS platforms.
- Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Lead problem management initiatives for recurring issues. Trace data anomalies through complex SQL queries and basic SAS Base code to identify where transaction scoring logic or ODE data transformations fail.
- Performance Tuning & Capacity Management: Monitor JBOSS server performance and ODE processing times during peak transaction windows. Recommend infrastructure scaling, JVM tuning, or application configuration tweaks to maintain strict SLAs.
- L3 & Vendor Coordination: Escalate deep code-level bugs or platform architecture issues to L3 Development or directly to SAS Institute Support, tracking vendor patches and JBOSS hotfixes through to deployment.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: 4-7 years in IT Application Support, with at least 2 years of hands-on experience directly supporting SAS Fraud Management (SFM), SAS Fraud Decisioning (SFD), and the On-Demand Engine (ODE).
Technical Knowledge:
- Strong administrative and troubleshooting experience with JBOSS EAP (Enterprise Application Platform).
- Strong proficiency in UNIX/Linux shell scripting for automation and system management.
- Advanced SQL skills (Oracle, PostgreSQL, or MS SQL Server) for data reconciliation.
- Working knowledge of SAS Management Console (SMC) and multi-tier SAS architecture.
- Domain Expertise: Deep understanding of payment processing architectures, high-availability real-time transaction flows, and fraud risk management principles.
- Problem Solving: High analytical capability to dissect complex enterprise application logs and data workflows under high-pressure scenarios.
